They had experienced a hard winter, for food was scarce and their clothing hardly enough to keep them warm. But the springtime brought sunshine, hope, and cheer. Everybody went on to the land and worked. Hundreds of immigrants were expected in the summer and autumn, and they would be in need of food. The work of colonizing the Great Basin by the Mormon pioneers had begun. They be gan the conquest of the soil, and, as they conquered, they loved the land more and more. The following account of the founding of Utah is intended to serve as an introduction to the later history of the State. The book, therefore, deals mainly with origins. It is a series of stories headed as chapters which give the principal eco nomic and social factors of our State's early history. The field of Western history has hardly been touched; and the same may be said of Utah history. Our State has passed through all the stages of economic and social life that are common to American civilization.
