Division is also indicated by writing the dividend above the divisor.

Thus, 63 indicates that 63 is to be divided by 9.

80. PRINCIPLES.

- 1. When the dividend and divisor are

like numbers, the quotient must be an abstract number.

2. The dividend and remainder are like numbers.

3. The product of the divisor and quotient, plus the remainder, is equal to the dividend.

An example like "How many 6's are there in 30? may be solved by subtraction, but it requires a longer time than by division. Hence, division may be regarded as a short method of subtracting equal numbers.

The same example may be solved readily by recalling the products in multiplication. When we wish to know how many sixes there are in 30, if we recall the fact that five sixes are 30, the answer is found at once. Hence, division is the converse of multiplication.
