Maidstone, Trinity, Boys'-1. Excellent modern building. Boys', girls', and infants'
under one roof, in ample separate rooms, 2. Good. 4. Good, except that reading suffers
from great size of classes, and is very inarticulate. 5. Mr. E. L. Luce, 27, Westminster,
a highly valuable person. 6. Selected additional pupil-teachers.

Maidstone, Trinity, Girls'.-2. Very satisfactory in all respects. 4. Good, both in amount
and quality. 5. Miss Harriet Oliff, Westminster; diligent, well-informed, and unassum-
ing. Natural timidity subordinated to good sense and feeling of duty. Evidently under
the influence of high principles. Fond of her scholars, and very successful in her school.
I held a collective examination in the Trinity infant school-room, of about 40 apprentices
and candidates. This room is admirably suited for such a purpose; and I have to thank
all connected with the institution for the facilities which they afforded for the examina-
tion.

Maidstone, All Saints, Boys'.-Mechanical character of this school indifferent. The
room large but low, confined and badly furnished; offensively contiguous to offices; and
can hardly be healthy. It has wall-desks, and other indications of the less modern
methods and routine. The instruction is nevertheless conducted with very creditable
efficiency by Mr. John Greenleaf, Westminster.

Maidstone, All Saints, Girls'.-A long and tolerably sufficient room at a short distance
from the boys', and over the Boys' Bluecoat School. This (the Girls' National) became
incorporated with the Girls' Blue Gown School (of which the dress survives on 40 of the
girls present) about four years ago. It is now a very tolerably efficient school, and fit for
the reception of apprentices.

Camberwell St. George, Boys'.-1. A very rainy day diminished attendance by 30.
The room is 45 feet by 30 feet, separated from the girls' by shutters, which can be removed
to form one large room. General appearance of the school on entering is that of old-
fashioned exclusion of modern accessories. 2. Very defective; talking and dishonest
copying incorrigible. 3. Monitorial. The younger classes are taught too individually, by
which much time and improvement is sacrificed. 4. Good in writing; fair in arithmetic;
moderate in reading. 5. Mr. William Oxley, 34, Westminster, active and obliging, and
quick enough in the subjects required.

Camberwell, St. George, Girls'.-The rain brought the attendance 25 below the ave-
rage. 1. The size of this school is the same as that of the boys'. 2. The very neat
appearance and orderly demeanour of the girls contrasted strongly with the boys. 3. The
monitorial method is employed, and the classes seemed very justly graduated. 4. The
instruction was very satisfactory within the range of Scriptural reading, writing, arith-
metic, and sewing; the last very neat, and the whole tone of things indicated that a salu-
tary influence was exercised over the school. 5. Mrs. Martha Phelps, 29, a very suitable
person for such a school; brought up to it by the clergyman: she is very unassuming,
frank, and active in her assistance of the inspection. 6. More secular reading seems to
me desirable.
Peckham, Boys' N.S.-1. A room 29 feet by 26 feet, lighted by skylight; separated

Peckham, Girls' N.S.-A good room, 29 feet by 26 feet, exactly similar to boys', except that
it has wall-desks; separated from boys' by a garden; lighted by skylight. Both schools very
fensive, and constantly so from imperfect drainage. 2 Good; neat, orderly, and contented-
looking girls. 3. Monitorial; four classes. 4. Fair in reading and arithmetic; writing
moderate. No girl at present fit for apprenticeship. 5, Mrs. Elizabeth Glover, a very
sensible and creditable person.
Southwark, St. George, Boys'.-An excellent room, 60 feet by 30, and 20 feet high.
The school has been entirely re-organized since this inspection; I refrain, therefore, from
any comments upon its discipline or instruction.

Southwark, St. George, Girls'.-1. A competent room, with parallel desks and class-
room; presents a thriving appearance. 2. Good. 4. Fair. 5. Miss Eliza Lockwood,
Westminster; good-tempered, intelligent, and of fair attainment; well acquainted with
her school. Selected girls for apprenticeship.

Ashford, Kent, Boys'.-1. Excellent room, 60 feet by 20 feet, with parallel desks; but
there is a very inconvenient resonance which has hitherto resisted all contrivances, and
which multiplies the noise of the school threefold. 2. Good. 4. Fair. 5. Mr. T. H. Vie,
Westminster; has been here two years. A very commendable person; painstaking, con-
scientious, and judicious. Attendance low at present on account of harvest. Selected two
boys for apprenticeship.
Ashford, Kent, Girls'.-1. A very good room, 40 feet by 20 feet, but wall-desks.
2. Good; the children look cheerful, and under good control. 4. Fair; but no girl yet
quite qualified for apprenticeship. 5. Miss Eliza Fitzgibbon, Westminster; here two
years; sensible and efficient.
Ashford, Kent, Infants'.-A remarkably good infant school, managed by Mrs. Vie,
wife of the boys' schoolmaster, with great ability and judicious kindness.

Buckland, Kent, Boys'.-Average number 45, reduced at present by harvest. 1. Boys'
school separated from girls' by sliding partition. Desks round the wall, but removed a
little from it, so that the boys face the master. 2. Ordinary. 4. Very scanty. 5. Mr.
John Mutton, 57, married to the girls' mistress: a person of highly respectable charac-
ter, but inefficient as a schoolmaster.
Buckland, Kent, Girls'.-Boys' school report applied precisely, mutatis mutandis, to the
Margaret-at-Cliff, Boys' and Girls'.-The average attendance here is 45 boys and 48 girls;
but being harvest time the school, in consequence of a misunderstanding, was not assembled.
The clergyman accompanied me, however, to the school and schoolmistress, and I was
enabled to form some kind of estimate of their efficiency. 1. One room, 30 feet by 16
feet; boys and girls separated by partition five feet high. Parallel desks in each division
for 25 children. From the copy-books and ciphering which I saw, I should judge the
instruction to be of fair village quality. The resident curate takes much interest in the
school, and ladies take daily turns to teach. 5. Mrs. Pilcher, widow, a worthy and in-
dustrious dame. 6. The school is overflowing as to numbers, I recommended an effort
for an infant school.

Epsom, Boys'-1. A good room, 46 feet by 18 feet, and 13 feet high; well warmed,
but moderately ventilated. Wall-desks, for which I urged substitution of parallel

Norbiton, Kingston, Boys'-1. An unusually roomy, well-built school, in good repair, with

nominatious, of which there are various members on the committee. 2. Fair; more
silent than such large schools commonly are. 3. Monitorial. 4. Reading fair in fluency;
accent and expression indifferent; writing good; arithmetic good; general knowledge
moderate. More secular reading wanted. 5. Mr. Druett, 45; not trained, but seems to
have a considerable turn for teaching; evidently takes pains, and with considerable

against wall, which might easily be made parallel. 2. Fair. 3. Monitorial. 4. Reading
good. Arithmetic fair. 5. Mr. Clarke, intelligent and painstaking. Might cultivate
moderate, partly in consequence of numbers of boys and scantiness of books. Writing
method and contrivance with advantage. Selected two boys for apprenticeship.
Blackheath, Trinity, Girls'.-1. Same as boys'. 2. Good, neat, orderly and cheerful.
3. Monitorial. 4. Fair, but more secular books would be an advantage. The classes are
very duly graduated as respects reading, but the junior classes are not taught letters
adroitly. An infant-school much needed. 5. Miss Helen Findlay, Westminster Central,
here two years. Intelligent, frank, well-mannered, and likely to exert a favourable influ-
ence over the school.

Woolwich, Boys'.-Excellent building, well drained and ventillated. Boys' school on
ground-floor. Wall desks. No infant-school, which is a great disadvantage. 2. Fair,
but numbers are too great for the room, which is a cause of noise. 3. Monitorial. 4.
Reading moderate, writing good, arithmetic fair; the intelligence of the children seems to
me not sufficiently cultivated. 5. Mr. John William Lever, 38; not trained, but well
instructed, and very painstaking.

Woolwich, Girls'.-1. Room over boys', of good dimensions, warmth, ventilation, and
repair. Wall desks. 2. Moderate; peremptory commands and slack obedience. 4 Read-

Gravesend, Boys'.-1. Very good spacious room, L shaped, 45 feet by 51, and 16 high;
light, warm, airy, and well found. Good raised parallels, upon a gallery, for 90 boys. 2.
Indifferent; partly, no doubt, owing to numbers, and small amount of assistance.
Talking and copying uncontrolled. 3. A fair specimen of the inefficiency of mouitorial
method. 4. Reading fair, but of too mechanical a character. Writing fair. Arithmetic
defective in accuracy. General knowledge limited to a very few upper boys, who were
candidates for apprenticeship. 5. Mr. Thomas Phillips, 35; painstaking, good-tempered,
interested in his work, but very much needs assistance in keeping so large a school. 6.
Selected two boys for apprenticeship.

Gravesend, Girls'.-1. Over boys', well found in pictures and maps; too near a very
noisy street. 2. Orderly, neat, and quiet. 3. Monitorial. 4. Reading fair in first class,
very moderate elsewhere. Writing and arithmetic indifferent. General knowledge very
scanty, and intelligence but faintly cultivated. 5. Mrs. Jemima Waldron, a highly
respectable person, and keeps good order.
Southfleet, Boys'.-1. An old-fashioned little school, boys' room 15 feet square and 15
high. Wall desks. Moderately furnished. 2. Ordinary. 4. Pretty fair reading. Intel-
ligent enough, and arithmetic not amiss, but they want suitable and amusing secular
reading. 5. Mr. William Mullender, 81, hale, cheery old gentleman, very good-natured
and unreserved about his school; he is also parish clerk; is assisted by his grandson, who,
he hopes, will succeed him.

Southfleet, Girls'.-Same as boys', but overcrowded. 2. Fair. 4. Fair. 5. Miss Eliza
Haxall, Westminster, here eight years. An infant-scool would be a very desirable relief
and asssstance to these schools.

Northfleet, Boys'.-1. Room 40 feet by 18, and 12 high. Light, clean, and cheerful.
Very insufficient wall desks, one at each end only. Scantily furnished. The fluctuating
population is a hindrance both to attendance and funds. There is no infant-school to take
off the non-readers. 2. Fair. 3. Monitorial. 4. Instruction very fair, and much better
than one would expect from mechanical disadvantages. Great want of secular reading.
5. Mr. William Lord, age 26, here seven years; a person of prepossessing manner and
appearance, unassuming and intelligent.

Northfleet, Girls'.-1. Same as boys', exactly. 2. Good. 3. Monitorial. 4. Fair, but
total deficiency of secular reading. 5. Mrs. Lord, wife of master. A superior-mannered
person, assisted cheerfully (as he also) in examination..

Brighton, St. John.-I visited this school to report with reference to master's certificate. The schools are ample and convenient. Discipline fair. Instruction satisfactory, save that the reading is too rapid and slipshod. The master, Mr. Josiah Anderson, 19, St. Mark's, here sixteen months. Is intelligent, good-tempered, well-informed. Sufficient in resources and vivacity, and likely, with earnestness and simplicity of purpose, to become a valuable teacher. He did not appear to me, however, quite to adapt the matter of his instruction to the humble level of the children's minds and requirements.
