HISTORICAL BOOKS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT.

1. FROM which of the sons of Noah did the Egyptians spring? What are the names and designations of Egypt and of the Nile in Scripture and ancient authors? When do we first hear of an Egyptian king? In what light does the state of the country and monarchy appear?

2. What marriage did Joseph contract in Egypt? What Egyptian rite was adopted by the first Hebrews? Give the positions of On and Goshen; also the other ancient names by which they are known. What remains of the former are still to be seen?

3. "When money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan' (Gen. xlvii. 15), what successive sales were effected by Joseph ? Give some account of the monetary system of the most ancient nations. Illustrate your remarks by Scriptural and other authorities. What is commonly understood by the golden drams (Adarconim) in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah?

4. Describe the Mosaic ceremonies for the purification of a leper. Why, in your judgment, was the leper excluded from the congregation? Shew from the Old Testament that leprous persons were not shut out from the ordinary intercourse of life.

5. 'Three times in the year all the males shall appear before the Lord thy God' (Exod. xxiii. 17). What were the three feasts? Give an account of the ceremonies at each of them, their object, the months of the year in which they were performed, and their duration.

What is the commonly received date of the Exodus ?

6. What are the allusions to the book of Jashar which occur in the Old Testament? What other works now lost are alluded to in the historical books?

7. What was the first city taken by Joshua? How was it taken? What allusion to its capture is found in the New Testament?

8. Give some account of Micah and of his Levite. What was the political state of Israel at that time? What does that time appear to have been? Are there any chronological difficulties about the book of Judges?

9. Prove that David was a type of Christ, and shew in what respects he was so. What events relating to his life and death are alluded to (directly or obliquely) in the New Testament? Give the date of his accession.

10. When and under what circumstances did Solomon come to the throne? What was the extent of his dominions? What powerful nations were his allies? Enumerate his extant works; and the subjects of his investigation. Ritter says that the ancient Hebrews did not possess any species of philosophy (Hist. of Ancient Philosophy, Book II.): how is this remark to be understood?

11. What glimpses of Egyptian history do we obtain from the Old Testament during the reigns of Rehoboam, Hoshea, and Josiah? Point out the especial value of the first of them for Egyptian chronology. By what profane author is the event in Josiah's reign illustrated?

12. Mention the actions of Pul, Tiglath-Pileser, Shalmaneser, Sennacherib and Esarhaddon which are recorded in the Old Testament. Shew approximately at what times they must have sat respectively on the throne of Assyria. By what other name or names is Shalmaneser known? Where does the name of Nineveh first occur in the Old Testament? Quote the passage according to the authorized version. In what other way has it been rendered? Give a brief account of the recent discoveries at Nineveh, and mention any confirmations of the Old Testament supplied by the monuments.

13. Relate briefly with dates the closing events of the kingdom of Judah.

14. Give some account of the following deities: Molech, Ashtaroth, Dagon, and Nisroch. What do you understand by Teraphim?

15. Write brief geographical and historical notices and discussions on the following words: Tarshish, Javan, Tadmor, Ophir, Samaria, Hebron. Mr Stanley (Sinai and Palestine Preface) says that in the Old Testament we have what may without offence be termed its Domesday Book." What is that Book? Indicate the points of similarity between them.

GREEK TESTAMENT.

1. DESCRIBE the different Greek MSS. designated by the letters B and D. What is the authority of the 'textus receptus,' and on what is it founded? Give a brief account of the Syriac versions of the New Testament.

2. Explain the geographical references in the following passages: α. κατέπλευσαν εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν (v.1. Γερασηνών) ἥτις ἐστὶν ἀντιπέρα τῆς Γαλιλαίας. Luke viii. 26.

β. ἀνθρωπός τις κατέβαινεν ἀπὸ Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς Ἱεριχώ. Luke x. 30.

γ. πόλις τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένη Συχαρ, πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου οὗ ἔδωκεν Ιακωβ Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ. John iv. 5.

δ. ἐκεῖθεν εἰς Φιλίππους ἥτις ἐστὶ πρώτη τῆς μερίδος τῆς Μακεδονίας πόλις κολωνία. Acts xvi. ll.

What is the difficulty in reconciling the accounts of the scene of the Ascension? And how may it be explained?

3. Distinguish the following synonymes:

αἰων, κόσμος; ψυχικός, σαρκικὸς; ῥαββὶ, ῥαββουνὶ: ἔθνος, λαὸς; κόφινος, σπυρὶς; τιμωρία, κόλασις; ζωή, βίος; πλύνω, νίπτω, λούω, βάπτω.

4. Discuss the historical difficulties in the following passages:

α. ἕως τοῦ αἵματος Ζαχαρίου υἱοῦ Βαραχίου, ὃν ἐφονεύσατε με ταξὺ τοῦ ναοῦ καὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου.

β. αὕτη ἡ ἀπογραφὴ πρώτη ἐγένετο ἡγεμονεύοντος τῆς Συρίας

Κυρηνίου.

γ. ἐτέθησαν ἐν τῷ μνήματι ᾧ ὠνήσατο Ἀβραὰμ τιμῆς ἀργυρίου παρὰ τῶν υἱῶν Ἐμμὸρ τοῦ Συχέμ.

5. Explain these official titles, mentioning where they occur in the New Testament:

τετράρχης, ἀνθύπατος, ἡγεμὼν, ἐπιτρόπος, στρατοπεδάρχης, χιλίαρχος, πολιτάρχης, ῥαβδοῦχος, στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ, Ἀσιάρχης, άρχι συνάγωγος, νεωκόρος.

In what significations is ἀρχιερεὺς found ? Explain ἐπὶ ἀρχιερέως Ἄννα καὶ Καϊάφα (Luke iii. 2). What were the exact positions held by Annas and Caiaphas during any part of the sacred narrative?

6. Discuss the text in these passages:

α. τίνα θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν, Βαραββᾶν ἢ Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν; Matth. xxvii. 17.

β. ταῦτα ἐν Βηθαβαρᾷ ἐγένετο πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, John i. 28. γ. τὸ γὰρ Ἄγαρ Σινᾶ ὄρος ἐστὶν ἐν τῇ Ἀραβίᾳ. Gal. iv. 25.

7. Compare the three miracles of the raising of the dead recorded in the Gospels, and point out their distinctive features.

8. Enumerate the different persons bearing the names of Mary and of James respectively, mentioned in the New Testament.

Give as briefly as possible your reasons for identifying any two.

9. What is the external evidence as to the authorship of the Epistle to the Hebrews?

10. Translate and explain these passages:

(1) ὅπως πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ τῶν προφητῶν, ὅτι Ναζωραῖος κληθήσεται. Matth. ii. 23.

(2) ὁ προφήτης εἶ συ; John i. 21.

(3) οὗτός ἐστιν ἡ δύναμις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ καλουμένη μεγάλη.

Acts viii. 10.

(4) ἐπιστεῖλαι αὐτοῖς τοῦ ἀπέχεσθαι ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλισγημάτων τῶν εἰδώλων καὶ τῆς πορνείας καὶ τοῦ πνικτοῦ καὶ τοῦ αἵματος.

EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS. GREEK TESTAMENT.

1. WHAT do you infer from this Epistle as to the composition of the Roman Church? How far are the notices in this Epistle borne out by the account in the last chapter of the Acts? Explain any apparent discrepancies.

2. Determine the date of this Epistle, and shew that it was written from Corinth.

Mention any communications which passed between the Churches of Rome and Corinth during the first two centuries.

3. Explain the difference between νόμος and ὁ νόμος, πίστις and ἡ πίστις, as used by St Paul. Give examples from this Epistle.

4. In what relation does St Paul's doctrine of justification by faith as stated in the fourth chapter stand to the language of St James on the same subject? What position does Clemens Romanus hold with respect to St Paul and St James?

5. Give an analysis of the argument of the third chapter.

6. Translate, and explain these passages:

(α) Ὃν προέθετο ὁ Θεὸς ἱλαστήριον διὰ τῆς πίστεως ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ αἵματι, εἰς ἔνδειξιν τῆς δικαιοσύνης αὐτοῦ, διὰ τὴν πάρεσιν τῶν προγεγονότων ἁμαρτημάτων ἐν τῇ ἀνοχῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ. iii. 25.

(β) Beginning, Ἡ γὰρ ἀποκαραδοκία τῆς κτίσεως, κ.τ.λ.

FIRST EPISTLE OF ST PETER.

1. MENTION all the names by which St Peter is designated in the New Testament, and explain them. Give the Greek of Matth. xvi. 18: "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; &c." How do you interpret this prophecy, and what do you consider its fulfilment ?

2. Explain the passage: ἀσπάζεται ὑμᾶς ἡ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι συνεκλεκτή Kai Máρkos ỏ viòs. (1 Pet. v. 13.) Is there any mention of St Peter's relations elsewhere in the New Testament? What do you understand by ev Baßul@vi? What is your view of St Peter's alleged visit to Rome?

3. What early apocryphal writings were attributed to St Peter? What was their character, and by whom are they cited? Mention the chief objections raised against the authenticity and genuineness of St Peter's second Epistle. How do you meet them?

4. To what class of believers is this letter addressed? reasons for your answer, and cite passages (in the Greek) from the Epistle itself in support of your view.

5. What interviews between St Peter and St Paul are recorded in the New Testament or elsewhere? Give some account of the Clementines. What is the relation there represented to have existed between the two Apostles? Show that this is false. How has the view of the Clementines been revived in modern controversy, and with what object?

What persons mentioned in the New Testament may be specially regarded as connecting these two Apostles together.

6. Translate, and explain fully the following passage:

Beginning, "Οτι καὶ Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθε, κ.τ.λ. Ending, ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων. iii. 18-22.

7. Give the Greek of the following passages from the authorised version, and correct the English:

"If ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work." i. 17.

"But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake." iii. 14.

"Above all things having fervent charity among yourselves." iv. 8.
