PREFACE.

THIS work is primarily intended for the use of the boys in Grammar and Middle-class Schools. I have omitted all explanation of the elementary rules, because at the age at which they are learnt a boy is unable to gain his knowledge of rules from books, and usually depends entirely upon his master. In the higher rules I have aimed at giving such explanations and illustrations as a boy of average ability can understand, rather than a logical proof. At the same time have studied conciseness, that a boy may learn the valuable lesson that no part of his text book can be slurred over unmastered, and because a brief explanation is as easily comprehended, and more readily referred to afterwards than a diffuse one. I have arranged the subjects according to their difficulty and general usefulness, rather than their natural sequence. In the treatment of Rule of Three, I have ventured from the beaten path; because boys when they want to learn it are unable to understand the theory of ratios, and the rule of thumb by which they usually work is injurious, as it gives them no test by which to know when the rule is applicable. The theory of ratios, proportion, and variation, as applied to the Rule of Three, is explained in a subsequent chapter. The examples, which have been collected from various sources, I have made to result almost uniformly in neat answers, because a boy is more interested in such examples, is led
