If you hold up 3 fingers on one hand, and 2 fingers on the other, and then count them all together, you will see there are 5 fingers; so you know by addition, that 3 and 2 make 5.

Sum 1.-Here are some Roses, they are put down as figures should be for addition, one under the other; and the figure that answers to their numbers is at their side. Now add them up. How many roses do you make?

1

Now we begin at the bottom, and say one and one are two and one is three; then put down three, thus you see then there are three roses. NOTE.--To prove that

your sum, is right, begin it again at the top and reckon to the bottom, and see if it comes the same.

Sum 2.-If you have 4 cents in one hand, and 2 cents in the other; how many cents will you have in both hands?

Put the cents all together and count them; one, two, three, four, five, six.

So you see 4 and 2 added together make 6.

Sum 3.--Now we will draw a line between each parcel of flowers that is meant by the figures, and then you must count up the figures in like manner: add together 2,3, and 4, how many do they make ?

2 flowers

3 flowers

Now we begin at the bottom, and say 4 and 3 are 7 and 2 are 9, and put down

4 flowers

Now count the flowers singly, and you will find that there are four under the first line, three under the second, and two at the top, answering to the figures 4, 3, and 2, and if you count them one by one you will find nine flow

ers.

Sum 4.-If you have 5 apples in your box, and 3 apples in your pocket, and 2 apples in your hand; how many apples have you in all ?

Set down the figure 5, and under it the figure 3, and under this the figure 2. Then begin at the bottom and add thus; 2 and 3 are 5, and 5 are 10.

[blocks in formation]

have ten apples in all.

Sum 5.-Add up these Pears by the numbers, how many are there?

Now say, 5 and 3 are 8, and 4 are 12, and 3 are 15, and put down 15, that is 1 in the place of the tens, being one ten, and a five.

Now if you count the pears you will find there are just fifteen: so you see that the figures mean the quantity of pears for which they are each set down, and when reckoned up they amount exactly to the same.
