2. Discipline.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS. 3. Methods.

Baldwin's Gardens, Boys'.-Inspected April 30, 1849. This is a very commendable
school. Examined apprentices and candidates. 1. Ample room, with small class-room.
2. Good. 5. Certificate already signed by Mr. Cook, Christmas, 1848. 6. Another infant
school much wanted. Books and apparatus ample; desks and furniture very good.
Recommended two apprentices for stipends and two new candidates.

Baldwin's Gardens, Girls'.-Inspected April 30, 1849. 1. Four classes; mistress takes
first and second class in the morning, and third and fourth in the afternoon. The
apprentices take second, third, and fourth. 2. Discipline satisfactory. 5. The mistress
(Miss Susan Kyberd) is intelligent, well informed, and of modest self-possession. 6. This
school, like the boys', is much the worse for not being disencumbered of infants. The
adjoining infant school is crammed. Books and apparatus sufficient, and always forth-
coming as needed. Desks and furniture good. Wrote upon mistress's certificate" not-
withstanding some disadvantageous local circumstances, this school exhibits a satisfactory
degree of discipline and attainment, and appears to be conducted with conscientious zeal,
intelligence, and efficiency."

Camberwell, Christchurch, Boys'.-Inspected May 1, 1849. Examined for apprentices.
1. As reported last year; discipline fair. Instruction fair. 5. Master about to leave.
Books, apparatus, desks, and furniture all very good.

Camberwell, Christchurch, Girls'-Inspected May 1, 1849. 1. Four classes in one room,
rather crowded, but light and airy. 2. Discipline very good. 5. A person of good
manners, attainment, and influence. 6. This is a very commendable school, both as
respects instruction and moral character. The children present are of extremely credit-
able, appearance, and all is going on as might be wished. Books and apparatus sufficient.
Furniture good, except wall-desks, which it would be difficult to alter without loss of
room which cannot be spared. Wrote upon the mistress's certificate-"I have to record
a very satisfactory impression of the discipline and efficiency of this school, and of the
spirit in which it appears to be conducted."

St. John's Wood, Girls'.-Inspected May 2, 1849. The discipline of this school is
highly satisfactory. The instruction proportionate; and the mistress a person of excellent
personal character, ability, and zeal. Books, apparatus, desks, and furniture all good.
Report very favourably of all the apprentices, as well as of the moral tone, discipline,
and attainment of the school generally.

Bethnal Green, St. Peter's, Boys'.-Inspected May 2, 1849. 1. Eight classes under a
master and pupil-teacher. 2. Discipline rather defective; the result, perhaps, of in-
sufficient accommodation with its mechanical disadvantages. 5. A commendable, pains-
taking person. There is a deficiency of reading books, desks, and furniture not to be
criticised in these temporary buildings.

Stepney, St. Thomas, Boys'.-Inspected May 3, 1849. 1. One large room over the girls'
(with a class-room common to both schools); light, airy, and ample, with parallel desks.
Eight classes under one master, three apprentices, and five monitors. The discipline and
instruction have hardly yet assumed a decided aspect under the new master, recently from
Battersea. Books and apparatus hardly sufficient. Desks and furniture good.

and four apprentices. 2. Satisfactory; clean, cheerful, and orderly. 3. Same as in
Central, Westminster. 4. Moderate in quality and quantity. 6. The teaching of the
pupil-teachers is very defective in method; and allowance of stipend to apprentices in
either school should be upon a stipulation that this should be especially attended to.
Books and apparatus hardly sufficient; desks and furniture very good.

Stepney, Al Saints, Boys'.-Inspected May 4, 1849. 1. A boys' school up-stairs, under
master and one assistant, besides three pupil-teachers. Five classes, arranged primarily
according to reading, but changed into separate classification for ciphering. 2. Ordinary;
the boys somewhat deficient in obedience. 3. Glasgow system combined with such others
as have from time to time suggested themselves. 4. Very fair; books and apparatus
sufficient by recent grant. Desks and furniture excellent.

Stepney, All Saints, Girls'.-Inspected May 4, 1849. 1. One room on ground-floor,
clean-looking and well-lighted. No class-room. Five classes under mistress and pupil-
teacher. Discipline exceedingly good. 5. Certificated January, 1848, from Whitelands.
6. The instruction here is not quite on a par with the moral tone and discipline, but the
school is decidedly one for encouragement, with an admonition that its actual attainment
in reading and general information admits of improvement.

Islington, St. Mary, Boys'.--Inspected May 7, 1849. 1. The school was formerly a
dissenting chapel, of which the galleries remain unemployed. There is plenty of room,
and if the school attained the numbers which might be expected in such a neighbour-
hood, a second room might be made by continuing the floor of the gallery. The boys
are under one master, assisted by four apprentices and a monitor. The discipline is quite
satisfactory. Great pains are taken by the master, but with imperfect and partial effi-
ciency of result; he is, however, both diligent and conscientious. 6. A whole class
misses writing and ciphering because they are required to furnish themselves with
slates, which they have failed to do. The school is deficient in mechanical advantages,
both as respects books and apparatus, desks and furniture.

Portman Square, Boys'.-Inspected May 8, 1849. 1. Under a master assisted by three
pupil-teachers, and three monitors, candidates. The room is a little crowded, but the
space is as well economized as the case admits of. An infant school teaches letters, &c.
Discipline extremely good, and instruction satisfactory. 5. Mr. James Michaux; intel-
ligent, and interested in his work. Books and apparatus sufficient. Desks and furniture
good.
Portman Square, Girls'.-Inspected May 8, 1849. 1. There are four classes under mis-
tress, two pupil-teachers, and two monitors. The room adjoins the boys', divided from
it by folding doors. The two rooms together would not be more than enough for either
school, the other finding accommodation elsewhere. Discipline very good indeed. 5. Mrs.
Fisher has been here only 12 months. A very right-minded, unassuming person. 6. The
cardinal subjects of instruction in this school are taught very satisfactorily. The amount
of general knowledge and intelligence is rather scanty. There wants an infusion of very
simple geography-geography made simple by animated conversation as explanatory of
their reading lessons. There are plenty of books and maps, but no globe. The parallel
desks are too small, and the whole too crowded.
