1849.]

Rev. W. J. Kennedy's General Report.

2. Discipline.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS. 3. Methods.

1. Organization.
Bickerstaffe.-Inspected 28th March, 1849. 1. Boys' and girls' schools, conducted
on the same system, are both taught in open classes, on loose benches, and also in

attainments and skill, but is, I fear, weak in health. The mistress is from Whitelands,
and is a pleasing person. 6. These schools are more complete in their arrangements,
in their supplies of apparatus and books, and generally in their whole equipment and
tournure than any schools I have seen. In these respects the schools, playgrounds,
and teachers' residences are models. This is chiefly to be attributed to the good taste
of the clergyman, Mr. Abraham, who, however, has been most handsomely supported
by the Earl of Derby. The Earl gave 500l. for the teachers' residences alone. Some.
thing also is attributable, perhaps, to the taste of the first master from St. Mark's.
The boys' school is suffering from the effects of changes of masters.

Ormskirk, Boys'.-Vicar's School.-Inspected 29th March, 1849. 1. The children are
arranged in open classes, on loose benches. There are desks along the wall, at which
they write, and there is a master's desk. 2. Effective. 3. The children are taught in
the usual way. 4. Very fair in amount. 5. The master is a young man from St. Mark's
College, who appears to be getting on very nicely. 6. Great pains are taken with this
school by the clergy. The room was remarkably neat and clean when I saw it and

a much better room if he were allowed the advantages offered in the Minutes of Council
of 1846, &c. For aught I could see, the school is deserving of such aid.

Ormskirk, Girls'.-Vicar's School.-Inspected 29th March, 1849. 1. This school is
arranged for open classes, on loose benches, and also has parallel desks on a gallery.
2. Pretty good. 3. The ordinary methods are pursued. 5. The mistress is rather a
pleasing young woman. 6. The curate of Ormskirk, Mr. Blenkinsopp, takes great pains
with the girls, especially in teaching arithmetic to them. The present room, like that
of the boys' school, is not perhaps all that could be desired. There is a nice infant
school under the girls' school, but I did not examine it particularly. In the three
schools there were 260 children.

Waterloo.-Inspected 30th March, 1849. 1. Open classes on loose benches. There
is a long desk in the boys' school, at which the children write; when writing, the

arithmetic also. 2. Adequate. 4. Moderate. The school is new, and indeed, the
whole district is new, but will probably become large and important. 3. Those
usually pursued; aud there is no peculiarity, except those mentioned under the 1st
head. 5. I was pleased with both master and mistress; they are neither very ex-
perienced, but may succeed, with study and pains. 6. This is a convenient watering-
place for Liverpool and the neighbourhood, which has recently come into vogue. The
district seems likely to become populous.

Granby-row.-Girls'.-Inspected 2nd April, 1849. 1. Open classes, and parallel desks. 2. Moderate. 3. Ordinary 4. Moderate. 5. Appears to me to be inadequate to the school which ought to exist here."

Eccles, Bromhouse-lane-Inspected 6th October, 1849. 1. Four classes, partly in desks, and partly on the flour. 2. Fair, and order improved. 3. Ordinary. 5. A young

man trained at Battersea. 6. There is an improvement in this school since January
last. The desks and benches are much better arranged, and there are four classes
instead of eight, which, in a school of 52 children, is manifestly an arrangement for the

moderate qualifications. Books and apparatus-moderate supply. Some good copy-
slips are wanted. Desks and furniture-master's desk; writing-desks along the wall.
There is a want of benches for the classes.

Ashton-under-Lyne, Christ Church, Boys'.-Inspected 3rd April, 1849.
1. Open
classes on loose benches, and parallel desks on a gallery. There is an orgau. 2. Mode-
rate, but the district is rough and rude. 3. Ordinary. 4. Moderate, but all is new here.
5. The master is a well disposed, but not clever young man, who was for some time at
the Westminster Institution. 6. This district is steeped in poverty, is very rude, aud
abounds in socialism. The clergyman does all that man can do for the schools, but he
is shamefully supported, or rather, not supported at all; indeed, he evidently works too
hard. The Pastoral Aid, or the Curate's Aid Society ought to give him a curate, which
would be a great help to the school, as well as to the other parts of the parish.
Ashton-under-Lyne, Christ Church.-Girls'.-Inspected 3rd April, 1849. This school is
too wretched in all respects to be worthy of detailed notice. What is wanted is a good
mistress, and funds wherewith to pay her.

Chorlton-on-Medlock, St. Saviour's, Boys'.-Inspected 4th April, 1849. 1. Open classes
on benches. Double writing-desks, and an infant gallery. A door opens from the boys'
into the girls' schoo!. The infant gallery is coutinued along in the girls' school, and
the master reads prayers to both schools from the doorway. 2. Effective, though the
master is perhaps a little rough. The clergyman, however, to whom I mentioned this
point, says that the boys are attached to the master. 3. Those almost universally pur-

writing, which is very good. 5. Is a self-educated man; uncouth, but above the average.
He appears to possess one element of success, viz., that he is devoted to his work, and
takes a pleasure and a pride in it. 6. This is a successful school. The district is
evidently far above many in wealth.

Chorlton on Medlock, St. Saviour's, Girls'.-Inspected 4th April, 1849. 1. Precisely as
in the boys' school. 2. Good. 3. Ordinary. 4. Very fair. 5. Much above the average
in appearance, manners, intelligence, and aptitude to teach. She does not discredit
her certificate.
