EXTRACT FROM "THE CIVILIAN," DECEMBER 8TH, 1883.

"The stranger, in passing down Greenfield Street, Whitechapel, would never dream that at the back of one of these obscure houses in an obscure street, was situated a manufactory where was produced some of the finest, soundest, and most artistic furniture in the world. The name over the unpretending doorway is that of C. Birks and Sons, a name that has stood there from father to son for generations. We believe that they were the first firm affiliated with the Civil Service Supply Association for the supply of high-class furniture, and we must commend the rare foresight of those who had charge of the preliminary arrangements. On account of the new plan of supplying members with furniture, the name of C. Birks and Sons no longer appears in the catalogue, but, like the fifteen other firms who are equally conspicuous by their absence have to look to their old connections; and we are glad to say that the splendid reputation of Messrs. Birks still brings them orders from the Service, from Hong Kong in the East, to Demerara in the West.'

FROM "THE CIVILIAN," 1ST DECEMBER, 1883.

The young Civil Servant, no matter what may be the state of his pocket, has to assume and maintain the appearance of a gentleman. But, be this as it may, there is no more occasion for a Civil Servant to "wear his heart upon his sleeve" than for some of those who live in high places to do so. It is a well-known fact that if all the jewellery worn at the Drawing-Rooms had to pass an official test a good many names would be absent from the list of those who had the honour of kissing hands. Such being the case, it would be an uncalled-for piece of self-denial and a doubtful act of economy for Civil Servants, with their distinctions in the way of salaries, and unlimited demands upon limited means, to forego the possession of a watch or other article of jewellery until their means would justify the purchase of nothing but the genuine article. These remarks are particularly appropriate in connection with an illustrated catalogue we have received showing forth the many and wonderful designs obtainable in oroide jewellery, and manufactured by Mr. C. C. Rowe, of No. 92, Brompton Road. It is questionable if any one, without the aid of chemicals, could notice the least difference; in fact, the probabilities are that the Oroide would be selected as the real gold. Accurate timekeepers, having the appearance of 20-guinea watches, are produced at 50s. There are so many things equally deserving of notice that we must recommend a visit, which we are sure will be gratifying.
