PREFACE.

Of the many excellent Sermons which have been published of late years, none, that I have seen, have in my humble opinion, the merit of being sufficiently simple in their language and composition, for the unlearned poor: a class of persons which forms the principal part of most country congregations.

It has always been a matter of surprise and regret to me, that so few of the clergy appear to be aware of the extreme plainness of speech which is absolutely necessary to be used in addressing people of this description; and I am persuaded that this has tended more than any thing else to fill the Dissenters'
