PSALM I. C. M.
1 How blest is he, who ne'er consents By ill advice to walk;
Nor stands in sinners' ways; nor sits Where men profanely talk.
2 But makes the perfect law of God His business and delight; Devoutly reads therein by day, And meditates by night.
3 Like some fair tree, which, fed by streams, With timely fruit doth bend,
He still shall flourish; and success All his designs attend.
4 Ungodly men, and their attempts, No lasting root shall find; Untimely blasted, and dispers'd Like chaff before the wind.
5 But God approves the just man's To happiness they tend :
While sinners, and the paths they tread, Shall both in ruin end.
1 Maker, and sovereign Lord
Of heaven, and earth, and seas, Thy providence confirms thy word, And answers thy decrees.
2 The things so long foretold By David, are fulfil❜d,
When Jews and Gentiles join'd to slay Jesus, thine holy child.
3 The Lord derides their rage,
And will support his throne;
He that has rais'd him from the dead Hath own'd him for his son.
4 Be wise, ye rulers, now,
And worship at his throne;
With trembling joy, ye people, bow To God's exalted son.
5 If once his wrath arise,
Ye perish on the place;
Then blessed is the soul that flies For refuge to his grace.
A Morning Psalm.
PSALM III. C. M.
1 Thou art, O Lord, my sure defence, On thee my hopes rely;
Thou art my glory, and shalt yet up my head on high.
2 For whensoe'er, in my distress, To God I made my prayer, He heard me from his holy hill, Why should I now despair?
3 Guarded by him I laid me down, My sweet repose to take; For I through him securely sleep Through him in safety wake.
4 Salvation to the Lord belongs, He only can defend ; His blessing he extends to all Who on his pow'r depend.
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom we adore, Be glory, as it was, is now, And shall be evermore.
1 O Lord! how many are my foes In this weak state of flesh and blood: My peace they daily discompose; But my defence and hope is God. 2 Tir'd with the burdens of the day To thee I rais'd an evening cry: Thou heard'st when I began to pray, And thine Almighty help was nigh.
3 Supported by thy Heav'nly aid, I laid me down and slept secure ; Not death should make my heart afraid, Though I should wake and rise no more.
4 But God sustain'd me all the night; Salvation doth to God belong: He rais'd my head to see the light,
And makes his praise my morning song. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye Heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Evening Psalm.
PSALM IV. C. M.
1 Lord, thou will hear me when I pray, I am for ever thine;
I fear before thee all the day, Nor would I dare to sin.
2 And while I rest my weary head, From care and business free, 'Tis sweet conversing on my bed With my own heart, and thee.
3 I pay this evening sacrifice,
And when my work is done, Great God! my faith and hope relies Upon thy grace alone.
4 Thus with my thoughts compos'd to peace, I'll give mine eyes to sleep; Thy hand in safety keeps my days, And will my slumbers keep.
1 Lord, hear the voice of my complaint; Accept my secret prayer:
To thee alone, my King, my God, Will I for help repair.
2 Thou in the morn my voice shalt hear; And with the dawning day To thee devoutly I'll look up, To thee devoutly pray.
3 And let all those who trust in thee With shouts their joy proclaim; Let them rejoice whom thou preserv'st, And all who love thy name.
4 To righteous men the righteous Lord His blessing will extend;
And with his favor all his saints, As with a shield, defend.
