NOTATION AND NUMERATION.

UNITS.

1. The NINE DIGITS and their names are as follows: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 one two

three four five six seven eight nine 2. Each of these digits, when written alone, represents as many UNITS, or ones, as are indicated by its

name.

PROBLEMS.

1. Draw as many letters like this (I) on your slate, or on the blackboard, as are indicated by the FIGURE 5; 3; 4; 7; 1; 9; 8; 2; 6.

2. Find a word composed of 3 letters; 5 letters; 7 letters; 9 letters; 1 letter; 2 letters; 4 letters; 6 letters; 8 letters.

3. Write the following NUMBERS, by the aid of the proper figure, on your slate, or on the blackboard: seven; six; nine; five; three; one; four; two; eight. 4. Read the following expressions orally:

2 and 3 are 5; 3 and 4 are 7; 7 and 1 are 8;

5 and 2 are 7; 4 and 3 are 7;
2 and 1 are 3; 2 and 2 are 4;

3 and 3 are 6;
5 and 4 are 9.

TENS.

3. Each of the digits, when written at the left of the figure called CIPHER or NAUGHT (0), represents as many TENS as are indicated by its name. Thus:

2. Draw another group of ten lotters under the former.

How many UNITS are there? Ans. Twenty UNITS. 3. In the same way show that 3 TENS make 30 UNITS; 4 TENS make 40 UNITS; 5 TENS make 50 UNITS; 6 TENS make 60 UNITS; 7 TENS make 70 UNITS; 8 TENS make 80 UNITS; 9 TENS make 90 UNITS.

4. Read the following expressions:

20 and 10 are 30; 30 and 10 are 40; 20 and 30 are 50;

10 and 40 are 50; 20 and 50 are 70; 70 and 20 are 90; 50 and 10 are 60; 50 and 30 are 80;

10 and 70 are 80;
20 and 40 are 60;
40 and 30 are 70;
70 and 20 are 90;
30 and 50 are 80;

50 and 40 are 90; 30 and 60 are 90; 60 and 20 are 80; 30 and 20 are 50; 20 and 40 are 60.

UNITS AND TENS COMBINED.

4. When a digit is written in place of the cipher in the preceding numbers, the digit in the FIRST or righthand PLACE still represents UNITS, and that in the SECOND PLACE, TENS. Thus:

19 29 39 49 59 69 79 89 99 Read column (1) thus: Ten; eleven; twelve, etc. Read column (2) thus: Twenty; twenty-one, etc. Read column (3) thus: Thirty; thirty-one, etc. In the same way read each column in order.

Write on your slates, in figures, the number eleven; twelve; seventeen; fifteen; twenty-one; twenty-five; thirtytwo; thirty-six; forty-three; forty-seven; fifty-four; fiftyeight; sixty-five; seventy-nine; eighty-one; ninety-nine.

HUNDREDS.

5. Each of the digits, when written in the THIRD PLACE, represents as many HUNDREDS as are indicated by its name.

Thus:

200 300 400 500 600 700 800 900 are read, one HUNDRED; two HUNDRED, etc.
