The mighty God, the wise and just

There is an house not made with hands
There is a land of pure delight

These glorious minds how bright they shine
This is the day the Lord hath made
This spacious earth is all the Lord's
Thou whom my soul admires above
Though nature's strength decay
Thrice happy man who fears the Lord
Through all the various shifting scenes
Through ev'ry age, eternal God!
Thus far the Lord has led me on
Thus far 'tis well, you read, you pray
Thus I resolv'd before the Lord
Thus saith the first, the great command

[blocks in formation]

Thus saith the high, and lofty One

Thus saith the wisdom of the Lord
Thus the eternal Father spake

Tis a point I long to know

7. S. M. Dr. Watts.

Psalm cxvii.

1THY name, Almighty Lord,
That sound through distant lands:
Great is thy grace, and sure thy word;
Thy truth for ever stands:

2 Far be thine honour spread,
And long thy praise endure,
Till morning light and evening shade
Shall be exchang'd no more.

8. L. M. Mr. Addison.

Praise to God from the heavenly Bodies.

1THE spacious firmament ou high,
With the blue ethereal sky,

And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great original proclaim.

2 Th' unwearied sun, from day to day,
Doth his Creator's pow'r display;
And publishes to ev'ry land,
The work of an almighty hand.

3 Soon as the evening shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale,
And nightly, to the listening earth,
Repeats the story of her birth.

4 Whilst all the stars which round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.

5 What though in solemn silence all
Move round this dark terrestrial ball;
What though, nor real voice, nor sound,
Amid the radiant orbs be found;

6 In Reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice;
For ever singing as they shine,
"The hand that made us is divine."

GENERAL PRAISE.

HYMN I. L. M. Dr. Watts.
A Translation of the 100th Psalm.
EFORE Jehovah's awful throne,

Bre nations bow with sacred joy;

Know that the Lord is God alone:
He can create, and He destroy.

2 His sov'reign pow'r, without our aid,
Made us of clay, and form'd ns men:
And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd,
He brought us to his fold again.

3 We are his people, we his care,

Our souls and all our mortal frame: What lasting honours shall we rear Almighty Maker, to thy name?

4 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs: High as the heav'ns our voices raise; And earth, with her ten thousand tongues, Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise. 5 Wide as the world is thy command! Vast as eternity thy love!

1

Firm as a rock thy truth must stand, When rolling years shall cease to move! 2. L. M. Dr. Watts.

Y

Praise to our Creator.

E nations round the earth, rejoice Before the Lord, your sov'reign King: Serve him with cheerful heart and voice; With all your tongues his glory sing.

2 The Lord is God: 'tis He alone

Doth life, and breath, and being give:
We are his work, and not our own;
The sheep that on his pastures ive.

B

3

The shining worlds above
In glorious order stand,
Cr in swift courses move

By his supreme command.

He spake the word, and all their frame
From nothing came to praise the Lord.
4 He mov'd their mighty wheels
In unknown ages past,
And each his word fulfils

While time and nature last.

In diff'rent ways his works proclaim
His wondrous name, and speak his praise.

11. P. M. Dr. Watts.

The same continued.

ET all the earth-born race,
And monsters of the deep,

The fish that cleave the seas

Or in their bosom sleep,

From sea and shore their tribute pay,
And still display their Maker's pow'r.
Ye vapours, hail and snow,

Praise ye th' Almighty Lord,
And stormy winds that blow,
To execute his word:

When lightnings shine, or thunders roar,
Let earth adore his hand divine.

Ye mountains near the skies

With lofty cedars there,
And trees of humbler size

That fruit in plenty bear;

Beasts wild and tame, birds, flies and worms In various forms, exalt his name.

Ye kings and judges fear

The Lord, the sov'reign King;

And while you rule us here,

His heav'nly honours sing.

Nor let the dream of pow'r and state,
Make you forget his pow'r supreme.
Virgins and youth engage

To sound his praise divine,

While infancy and age

Their feebler voices join.

2 Let the high heavens your songs invite, Those spacious fields of brilliant light; Where sun, and moon, and planets roll, And stars, that glow from pole to pole." 3 Sing, earth, in verdant robes array'd Its herbs and flowers, its fruits and shade; Peopled with life of various forms,

Of fish, and fowl, and beast, and worms.
4 View the broad sea's majestic plains,
And think how wide its Maker reigns;
That band remotest nations joins,

And on each wave his goodness shines.
5 But O! that brighter world above,
Where lives and reigns incarnate love!
God's only Son, in flesh array'd,
For man a bleeding victim made.
6 hither, my soul, with rapture soar;
There in the land of praise adore;
The theme demands an angel's lay,
Demauds an everlasting day.

For ever firm his truth shall stand;
Praise ye the faithful God.
