(3) A farmer gave £48 15s. 1d. for 29 sheep; six of them died. At what rate per head must he sell the rest to gain £1 2s. 6d. by his bargain?

(4) A grocer mixes 47 lbs. of tea at 2s. 44d. a lb. with 39 lbs. at 25. 10. a lb.; at how much per lb. should he sell the mixture to gain 25. on the whole?

(5) A person bought a hogshead of wine at 15s. a gallon, of which he retained 9 gallons for his own use; at what rate per gallon must he sell the remainder, that he may have his own for nothing?

(6) 27 dollars, 19 half-crowns, and 47 half-guineas amount to £32 135. 6d.; find the value of a dollar.

A person, dividing £21 13s. 6d. amongst 24 people, gave 17s. 4d. to each of 13, and the remainder he divided equally amongst the others; how much did each receive?

(1) A stationer bought 38 reams of paper at 18s. 9 d. per ream, and paid carriage and other expenses 16s. 11d. He sold the outside quires of each ream at 6d. a quire; at how much per quire should he sell the remainder to gain 5 guineas by his bargain?

To multiply any given number by a fraction. When one number is written over another number thus, %, the is called a broken number, or fraction. It is read five-sixths, and denotes fivesixths of 1. The number below the line shows that I has been divided into six equal parts, and the number above the line that five of these equal parts have been taken.

In the same way we may find (five-sixths) of any number, namely, by dividing the given number into six equal parts, and taking five of these parts ; that is, by dividing the given number by 6, and multiplying the result by 5.

Find 5 of 18.

To find one-sixth of 18, we divide 18 by 6; this gives 3, and therefore five-sixths of 18 is 5 times 3,

or 15.

Or we may obtain the result by multiplying 18 by 5, and dividing the product by 6, thus:
