A unit is one single thing; and a number is either a unit or a collection of units. ? Thus one top, one marble, one ball, are units; and two tops, three marbles, four balls, being collections of units, are numbers.

Numbers standing by themselves, as two, three, four, &c., without reference to tops, marbles, balls, or any other things, are abstract numbers; but when the things as well as the number of them are expressed, as two tops, three marbles, four balls, they are concrete numbers.

Notation is the art of denoting numbers by characters; and

Numeration is the method of reading numbers expressed by characters.

There are two systems of notation in general use, the Arabic and the Roman.;

The Arabic notation expresses numbers by ten characters or figures.

The first nine numbers are denoted byFigures. Names and values. Figures. Naines and values.
