OCTOBER 1890.

First Year.

1. Analyse the following sentence into its constituent clauses, and each separate clause into its grammatical parts: "When they had finished their work, which was shockingly cruel, the Danes sat down to feast on the spoil they had taken from those they had murdered."

2. Explain and exemplify the following expressions: redundant letters, spirants, apposition, verbal noun, compound relative, causative verb, gerundial infinitive.

3. Trace the historical influences which have affected the vocabulary of the English language.

4. Explain the force of the following prefixes, and exemplify the use of each in an English word: ante, anti, dia, dys, hypo, hyper, per, peri, retro, se, subter, ultra.

5. When and how has Italy influenced English literature? 6. Indicate the successive periods of Shakespeare's literary activity, and the plays which belong to each.

7. Give an account of Dryden as a man of letters.

8. Give a short sketch of the poetry of natural description during the eighteenth century.

9. State what you know of Cowper and Crabbe as precursors of nineteenth century poetry.

10. Name two representative prose writers of the seventeenth,

eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries respectively, with the titles of their chief works. Compare their styles.

11. Write a short note on each of the following: Hobbes, Sheridan, Herrick, James Hogg, Andrew Marvell.

12. Write a short essay on any poem or novel which you have read. Attend to punctuation and literary form.

Second Year.

1. Enumerate the Canterbury Pilgrims. Name the subjects of the best-known Tales, and the persons who tell them.

2. What different kinds of evidence have we for the chronology of Shakespeare's plays? Arrange the plays chronologically, so far as their dates seem to you to be ascertained.

3. Give some account of the plays founded on English history and of the Roman plays.

4. Sketch Milton's life, and characterise his different poetical works.

5. Name the chief prose writers between 1580 and 1660, with one important work by each. Give a fuller account of any two of the writers mentioned.

6. Write a short note on Chapman, Gawin Douglas, Sir Thomas Malory, Herrick, Skelton, Edmund Waller.

7. Write a short essay on "Shakespeare's Use of the Supernatural," illustrating your remarks from "Hamlet" and "Macbeth."

8. Sketch from the play the characters of Horatio and Laertes. 9. Explain the following quotations: in what connection do they occur in the play?—

The thoughts of Clodius were bent on taking vengeance on Ptolemy as soon as possible. He found means to get himself elected tribune of the people-an important office, which gave him great power. Clodius at once made use of his position for the destruction of Ptolemy. He pretended that that prince had no right to the kingdom of Cyprus, which, by the will of Alexander, had been left to the Roman people. It was determined, in consequence, that the kingdom of Egypt, and that of Cyprus, which depended upon it, belonged to the Romans in virtue of that donation; and Clodius, accordingly, obtained an order of the people to seize the kingdom of Cyprus, to depose Ptolemy, and to confiscate all his effects. To carry so unjust an order into execution, the very man was elected who had the greatest reputation for equity among the Romans. Cato was sent into the isle of Cyprus to deprive Ptolemy of his kingdom, who, says a historian, well deserved that disgrace on account of his many vices; as if a man's misconduct sufficiently authorised others in treating him unjustly, and making themselves the owners of all his possessions.

3. Grammar :

(α) Write down the sec. per. sing. of the imperative of utor, desino, facio, conor, vincio, misereor, narro, sum, nolo, aggredior, sortior, haurio, morior.

(6) What are the genders of hortus, ignis, nemus, lacus, radix, grex, tellus, seges, pes, cor, arbor, robur?

(c) State the different meanings of quem when it is an interrogative and when a relative pronoun. Give two short sentences in illustration.

(d) How is the future infinitive expressed when the verb has no future participle ? Give an example.

(e) What are the classes of verbs which are followed by the accusative and infinitive, and what by ut and the subjunctive?
