As many Candidates have inquired where the prescribed books are to be obtained, all English books can be easily procured through any London or local bookseller; and all works in foreign languages, through Messrs Williams & Norgate, Henrietta Street, London, or 20 South Frederick Street, Edinburgh.

RULES FOR CANDIDATES AT THE EXAMINATIONS.

1. Write your Subject, your Name, and the Centre at which you are being examined, at the top of the first page. Write your surname first, and your full baptismal name afterwards. 2. Number the pages as you proceed.

3. Write only on one side of the paper.

4. Be careful to state precisely the printed number of each question you answer.

5. Write each word in full. Contractions are not allowed. 6. See that all the pages are fastened together before they are handed to the presiding Examiner.

LECTURE, EXPLANATORY OF THE SCHEME.

This Lecture, by Professor Knight (price 3d., by post 4d.), is published by the Messrs Blackwood in the form of a pamphlet, entitled 'The Higher Education of Women, with Special Reference to the St Andrews University L.L.A. Examination and Diploma.' It may be had from the Secretary, L.L.A. Scheme, St Andrews.

EXAMINATION, 1891.

The following is a list of the preliminary examinations passed by those who came up for the L.L.A. Diploma in 1891 :

versity of Dublin, 3; Irish Board of Education, 6. In addition to these, candidates have entered with the following preliminary certificates-viz., Society of Arts, London; University College, Dundee; Queen's University, Ireland; Edinburgh Association for the Higher Education of Women; Cape of Good Hope University; Oxford University Extension Scheme; Cambridge University Extension Scheme; London Society for the Extension of University Teaching; Glasgow University Extension Scheme; Girton Entrance Examination; Natal Government Teachers' Certificate; French, German, and Swedish Government Certificates.

ST ANDREWS UNIVERSITY LOCAL EXAMINATIONS.

These Examinations-corresponding to the Oxford and Cambridge Local Examinations, and which have various privileges attached to them-are a preliminary to the L.L.A. Êxamination, and will be held May 31-June 2, 1892, at various centres in Scotland and England.

Correspondence Classes to prepare Candidates for the L.L.A. Examinations of the University of St Andrews will be resumed in October 1891.

The subjects taught include,-English, Anglo-Saxon, Latin, Greek, Logic and Metaphysics, Moral Philosophy, Physiology, Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, Education, French, German, Comparative Philology, History, Geography, Botany, and Church History. Other subjects may be added if applied for before the Session opens.

EXAMINATIONS

FOR 1892.

N.B. The SUPPLEMENT to the UNIVERSITY CALENDAR, containing the Lists of successful Candidates and the Papers of Questions for this year, and the Regulations for next year, both for the L.L.A. and Local Examinations, is issued by Messrs Blackwood & Sons, and may be had from them through any bookseller, price 1s.

Special Directions to Candidates.

1. Be at your seat in the Examination Room five minutes before the time fixed for the commencement of each Examination.

2. Before you begin to write your answers, insert in the blank spaces at the top of your paper—

1. Your Name, and the Centre at which you appear.

2. The Subject in which the questions are set which you are about to answer.

3. It is recommended that the questions be answered in the order in which they are set.

4. In writing your answers

1. Put in the margin the number of the question before each

answer.

2. Leave a blank space after each answer,

name at the top of each sheet.

3. Number your pages as you go on.

5. If you want anything in the course of the Examination, do not leave your seat, but stand, or if needful, call out your name. 6. As soon as notice is given (which will be five minutes before the end of the time), finish your Papers, see that they are numbered rightly and the sheets arranged in their numerical order. Thereafter take your sheets, unfolded, to the Examiner.

7. Two hours will be allowed for each Junior, and three for each Senior, Paper.

Cautions.

Any Candidate helping another, or asking another for help, or bringing a book or written slip to assist in writing the paper, will be removed from the Examination.

No communication whatever between Candidates when under examination will be allowed.

REGULATIONS FOR LOCAL EXAMINATIONS

FOR 1892.

THE Senatus of the University of St Andrews will hold Examinations, to be conducted by Professors, at Centres convenient for such pupils as may be presented to them.

The Examinations will be held on the 31st May, and two following days, commencing at 9 A.M. each day.

The University will give two kinds of Certificates-Junior and Senior. In both cases the names of the Candidates who have passed in any subject will be printed, with the percentage gained in that subject, and the same will hereafter be done in the Preliminary Examination.

A Committee of the whole Senatus is empowered by the University to make all arrangements necessary for these Examinations. Professor Birrell, Convener (for 1891-92).

Rules and Subjects.

A.

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION,

Which all Candidates must pass, in all the required subjects, before they can obtain marks for either Certificate. [See Directions for Candidates, 1, 2, 3.]

1. English.-Writing to Dictation, Parsing, Analysis of Sentences, and a knowledge of the method of forming English Nouns, Adjectives, and Verbs from each other.

2. History and Geography.—(a) British History (1760-1820). (b) The Geography of Asia, Africa, and America generally.

Or as an alternative for History and Geography, either Latin (2d stage, Education Code) or French (1st stage, Education Code).
