PREFACE.

THIS Psalter has been prepared, under the direction of the Conference, for use in our congregations. The authorized version of the Psalms constitutes the main portion of the work. The imprecatory psalms have been omitted; a few have been curtailed; and some other portions of Scripture have been added, together with the Te Deum and some ancient hymns. It is hoped that this book will greatly assist in promoting the praise of God in public worship. Here we have for the most part the words which the Holy Ghost has inspired.

The pointing has been carefully done, and it will require only few words to explain its use. The syllables allotted to the reciting note should be uttered with distinctness, and not "gabbled." Good chanting is good reading. The word at which the breathing should be made is printed in italics. The accentuated syllable is printed in
