XIII.-GOVERNMENT LAW CLASS, POONA.
(RECOGNIZED 1885.)

In April 1884 the Principal of the Deccan College requested that a Jurisprudence Class might be established and a Lecturer in Jurisprudence appointed in the Deccan College. It was pointed out that, for want of such a class, students of this College could keep none of their law terms as undergraduates, so that they laboured under a great disadvantage as compared with students in Bombay. In a Government Resolution, dated November 10th, His Excellency the Governor in Council sanctioned the establishment of the class asked for, subject to its recognition by the University. The class was recognized by the University, and a Law Lecturer was appointed. The Lecturer delivers about seventy lectures during the thirty-five weeks of the academic year on the subjects of the first year's course as given to undergra duates in Bombay. The salary of the Lecturer is Rs. 125 per mensem; Rs. 50 is given as a prize to the pupil who is first in the yearly examination. The year is divided into two terms, and the fee for each term is Rs. 25. The class was opened on January 1st, 1885.

XIV. GUJARAT LAW CLASS.

Jurisprudence was one of the subjects taught in the Gujarat Provincial College, which was founded in 1858; but owing to the failure of students to pass the Pleaders' examination, the Law Class was closed in 1872. The College was re-constituted in 1879, and in 1887 an application was made to the University through the President of the College Committee for the re-opening of a Law Class, on the ground that the students of this College were at a disadvantage compared with those of other Colleges, who were able to keep their terms in Law concurrently with those in Arts. In December 1890 a Law Class for the purposes of the First LL.B. Examination was finally sanctioned by the University for a period of five years. A Law Lecturer was appointed, and the class opened in January 1891.

Before the opening of the Sind Arts College, now the D. J. Sind College, in 1887, it was felt that it would be very desirable to establish a Law Class in connection with that institution, and in September 1887 application was made to the University for recognition in the Faculty of Law. As, however, the reconstruction of the University Law Course was then under consideration, this recognition was not then given. But afterwards in September 1890, after the settlement of the new Law Course, recognition was given for a term of five (5) years for the purposes of the First LL.B. Examination, A Professor of Law was then appointed, and the class was opened in January 1891. Another recognition for a term of five (5) years more has been given by the University from the year 1896.
