The Poona College of Science (formerly the Poona Civil Engineering College) arose out of a school established in Poona in 1854 by Government, at the suggestion of Lieut.-Colonel Walter Scott, Bombay Engineers, for the purpose of educating subordinates for the Public Works Depart ment. The College is under the control of the Principal, who is subordinate to the Director of Public Instruction. The College is divided into five Branches. Passed P.E. Examination. 1. Students who, after passing the Previous Examination, are educated through the English language for University Degrees in Civil Engineering. 2. Candidates for the Science Branch must have passed the Previous Examination of the University of Bombay or an examination recognized by the University of Bombay as equivalent to the Previous Examination. Approved Candidates are qualified to appear for the Intermediate B.Sc. Examination of the University after two years' attendance and for the B.Sc. on the completion of another year's attendance subse quent to passing the Intermediate B.Sc. 3. Students who, after passing the Previous Examination, study Scientific Agriculture in the College and the farm attached to it, and who obtain Degrees from the University. 4. Matriculated Students who enter the Forest Branch of the College, to which Branch appointments have been guaranteed annually by the Bombay Forest Department. 5. Students who prosecute their studies in the College and the Workshops attached to it, with the object of becoming skilled Maistries. Some of these continue their studies at the College and qualify for Suboverseers' appointments in the Public Works Department. Attached to the College are Workshops where practical instruction is conveyed to the students, and where work of various kinds is executed for Government and the public. In July 1863, Cowasjee Jehanghier Readymoney, Esquire, presented to Government the sum of Rs. 50,000 to assist in the erection of suitable buildings for the Coliege. The foundation-stone was laid by His Excellency Sir Bartle Frere on the 5th August 1865. The Endowments belonging to the College are held by Trustees. The present Trustees are Sir Jehanghier Cowasjee Jehanghier, Rao Bahadur Ganesh Govind Gokhale, and Mr. Gangadhar Vinayak Mehendale. Fellowships.
