THE PANDIT BHAGVANLAL INDRAJI
GOLD MEDAL AND PRIZE.

In December 1890, Messrs. Javerilal U. Yajnik and Karsandas Vallabhdas, Honorary Secretaries, Bhagvanlal Indraji Memorial Fund, offered to the University, on behalf of the friends and admirers of the late Pandit Bhagvanlal Indraji, a sum of Rs. 6,000, in 5 per cent. Bombay Municipal Debentures, for the foundation of a Medal and Prize, to be called the Pandit Bhagvanlal Indraji Gold Medal and Prize, and awarded annually for the best essay on some subject of Indian Epigraphy, Antiquities or Archæology to a Bombay Graduate of not more than fifteen years' standing, and for the foundation of a lectureship, to be called the Pandit Bhagvanlal Indraji Lectureship, appointment to which, the Secretaries desired, should be made on occasions when the Prize and Medal might remain unawarded for four years.

At a meeting of the Senate held on 18th December 1891, this offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate.

The Medal will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations:

1. "THE PANDIT BHAGVANLAL INDRAJI GOLD MEDAL" and a Prize of Books, the aggregate value of the Medal and Books being Rupees two hundred and seventy-five, shall be awarded annually by the Syndicate for the best Essay by a University student, in accordance with the subjoined

conditions.

2. Competitors shall be Graduates of the University of Bombay, who shall not be of more than fifteen years' standing from the date of graduation on the day prescribed for the sending in of the Essays. By the term "date of graduation" is to be understood the date of the Candidate's first receiving any Degree.

3. Competitive Essays shall be written in the English language on the subject appointed for the current year, and shall be sent in to the University Registrar on or before the fourth Monday in September. Each Essay shall be designated by a motto instead of the writer's name and shall be accompanied by a sealed cover containing the name of the competitor, and a declaration that the Essay sent in by him is bonâ fide his own composition.

4. The Essay shall be on some subject connected with Indian Epigraphy, Antiquities or Archæology.

5. The subject for competition is to be selected by the Syndicate an notified not less than twelve months before the day for sending in the Essays.

6. The Judges shall be two in number, and shall be nominated annually by the Syndicate. Their decision shall be announced on the fourth Monday in November,

7. The Medal shall be presented to the successful Candidate at the Convocation for conferring Degrees next ensuing after the Judges' decision.

8. The Medal and Prize shall not be awarded for any Essay which, in the opinion of the Judges, would not, when printed, be creditable to the University. But if only one Essay be sent in, nothing shall hinder the Judges from awarding the Medal and Prize, if the Essay appears to them to come up to the proper standard.

9. On all occasions when Academical costume is worn Medallists shall be entitled to wear their Medal.

10. Whenever the Medal and Prize are not awarded for a period of four years, the Syndicate shall select a competent scholar to deliver a series of not fewer than six lectures on Indian Epigraphy, Antiquities or Archæology in connection with the University, Rs. 1,000 being awarded to him as an honorarium.

11. Any surplus funds of this endowment which may accrue in the hands of the University after the payment of 5 per cent. of the annual income of the endowment to the General Fund of the University shall be applied towards the expenses connected with the Medal, Prize and Lectures; and after payment of such expenses, in such manner as the Syndicate shall think best fitted for furthering the object and purposes of the endowment.

12. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Medal and Prize may be awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the fund, provided the object for which the Medal and Prize have been founded is kept in view.

THE MUNCHERJI NOWROJI BANAJI SCHOLARSHIP.

In November 1891, the Executors of the last Will of the late Mr. Muncherji Nowroji Banaji, in a letter to the address of the then Vice-Chancellor, the Honourable Mr. H. M. Birdwood, I.C.S., M.A., LL.D., offered to the University a sum of Rs. 5,000 in 4 per cent. Government Paper for the foundation of a Gold Medal or Scholarship, as the University might think fit, the Medal or Scholarship being called "The Muncherji Nowroji Banaji Gold Medal or Scholarship."

At a meeting of the Senate held on 17th December 1892, this offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate.

The Scholarship will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations :

A Scholarship, to be called "THE MUNCHERJI NOWROJI BANAJI SCHOLARSHIP," of the value of Rs. 180 and tenable for one year, shall be awarded annually by the Syndicate to the Parsi Candidate who passes the Second Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Laws with the highest number of marks in the paper in " Equity with special reference to the Law of Trust, Mortgages and the Securities for Money, and Specific Relief": provided that the Scholarship shall not be awarded to any Candidate who obtains less than 50 per cent. of the marks in that paper.

2. The stipend of the Scholarship shall, subject to a deduction of 5 per cent. to be contributed to the General Fund of the University, be payable half-yearly by the University Registrar.

3. Any surplus which may arise from the vacancy of the Scholarship during any year or part of a year shall be applied by the Syndicate in such manner as they shall think best fitted for furthering the object and purposes of the endowment.

4. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Scholarship may be awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the Fund, provided the object for which the Scholarship has been founded is kept in view.

In January 1891, Mr. M. M. Bhavnagri, in a letter to the address of the Honourable Mr. Justice Birdwood, I.C.S., M.A., LL.D., the then

Vice-Chancellor, offered to the University, on behalf of Mr. Lalubhai Samaldas of Bhavnagar, a sum of Rs. 5,000 in cash "to be devoted to the encouragement of female medical study," the name of Mrs. Satyavati Lalubhai Samaldas being attached to the endowment. Later on Mr. Lalubhai Samaldas expressed his desire that a Hindu female Candidate should receive the benefit of the endowment in preference to any other female Candidate.

At a meeting of the Senate held on the 12th June 1893, this offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate.

The Scholarship will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations:

A Scholarship, to be called "THE MRS. SATYAVATI LALUBHAI SAMALDAS SCHOLARSHIP," of the annual value of about Rs. 200 or the interest of the fund invested, shall be awarded by the Syndicate, whenever vacant, to the Hindu female Candidate who has passed the First Examination in Medicine, within the twelve months preceding the award, with the highest number of marks, provided she holds no other University Scholarship of the same or higher value. If she holds such other Scholarship, the Scholarship will be awarded to the Hindu female Candidate who passes the said Examination with the next highest number of marks. In the event of no Hindu Candidate being qualified under the Rule, the Scholarship will be awarded to any other female Candidate who fulfils the requirements of this Rule.

2. The Scholarship shall be tenable for one year.

3. The Candidate who is awarded the Scholarship must satisfy the Syndicate, within six weeks from the date of her election, that she has joined a College recognized in the Faculty of Medicine.

4. The stipend of the Scholarship shall, subject to a deduction of five per centum to be contributed to the General Fund of the University, be payable half-yearly by the University Registrar on a bill to be drawn by the Head of such College, who shall certify under his signature on such bill that the Scholar is in regular attendance at the College, that her conduct is good, and that her progress in University studies is satisfactory.

5. Should the Scholar discontinue her University studies, or be unfavourably reported on by the Head of the College, it shall be in the discretion of the Syndicate to stop payment of the stipend, or to declare the Scholarship forfeited.

6. Any surplus which may arise from the vacancy of the Scholarship during any year or part of a year, shall be applied by the Syndicate in such manner as they shall think best fitted for furthering the object and purposes of the Endowment.

7. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Scholarship may be awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the Fund, provided the object for which the Scholarship has been founded is kept in view.

To commemorate the knighting of the Honourable Sir Dinshaw Manekji Petit on the occasion of the Queen's Jubilee, the Secretaries to the Sir Dinshaw Manekji Petit Entertainment Fund, in a letter dated 11th December 1889, offered to the University a sum of Rs. 6,500 in 4 per cent. Government Promissory Notes for the foundation of a Sir Dinshaw Manekji Petit Scholarship, to be awarded to the female Candidate who passes the Matriculation Examination with the highest number of marks and prosecutes her studies at the Grant Medical College with a view to qualifying herself for the medical profession. Later on the Committee of the fund agreed to the suggestion that the Scholarship should be awarded on the results of the First Examination in Medicine and expressed a desire that it should be called as it is called below..

At a meeting of the Senate held on the 12th June 1893 this offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate.

The Scholarship will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations :

A Scholarship, to be called "THE HONOURABLE SIR DINSHAW MANEKJI PETIT SCHOLARSHIP FOR LADY MEDICAL STUDENTS," founded from surplus funds of the public entertainment given in honour of the Knighthood conferred on that gentleman on the occasion of the Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen-Empress, of the value of Rs. 220 and tenable for one year, shall be awarded annually by the Syndicate to the female Candidate who passes the First Examination in Medicine with the highest number of marks and is specially recommended for the Scholarship by the Examiners, on condition that she prosecutes her studies in a College or Institution recognized by the University of Bombay in the Faculty of Medicine with a view to qualify herself for the medical profession.

2. The Candidate, who is awarded the Scholarship, must satisfy the Registrar, within six weeks from the date of her election, that she has joined a College or Institution recognized by the University of Bombay in the Faculty of Medicine.

3. The stipend of the Scholarship shall, subject to a deduction of 5 per centum to be contributed to the General Fund of the University, be payable half-yearly by the University Registrar on a bill to be drawn by the Head of such College, who shall certify under his signature on such
