2. Candidates for the Scholarship must forward their applications for it with their applications to appear at the Intermediate Examination for the degree of B.A. in connection with which the Scholarship is awarded. (Vide Form AAZ.)

3. The candidate to whom the Scholarship is awarded must satisfy the Syndicate, within six weeks from the date of his election, that he has joined a College or Institution recognized by the University of Bombay; and must prosecute his studies for the degree of B.A., selecting "Language and Literature as his optional subject and taking Avesta and Pahlavi as the second of the two languages comprising the group.

4. The stipend of the Scholarship shall, subject to a deduction of five per cent. to be contributed to the General Fund of the University, be payable half-yearly by the University Registrar on a bill to be drawn by the Head of such College, who shall certify under his signature on such bill that the scholar is in regular attendance at the College, that his conduct is good, and that his progress in University studies is satisfactory.

5. Should the scholar discontinue his University studies, or be unfavourably reported on by the Head of his College, it shall be in the discretion of the Syndicate to stop payment of the stipend, or to declare the Scholarship forfeited.

6. Any surplus which may arise from the vacancy of the Scholarship during any year or part of a year, shall, subject to a deduction of 5 per cent. to be contributed to the General Fund of the University, be added to the principal and shall be used for increasing the amount of the Scholarship.

7. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Scholarship may be awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the Fund, provided the object for which the Scholarship has been founded is kept in view.

In April 1897, Khan Bahadur Dorabji Padumji, President, and Dr. Arthur W. Thomson, Honorary Secretary, of the Dr. Theodore Cooke Memorial Committee, offered to the University a sum of Rs. 6,000 in 3 per cent. Government Paper for the foundation of a Prize in Dr. Cooke's name, to be awarded biennially for the best essay on some engineering subject.

At a Meeting of the Senate held on the 30th August 1897, this offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate.

The Prize will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations:

1. A Prize, to be called "THE DR. THEODORE COOKE MEMORIAL PRIZE," of the value of Rs. 399, shall be awarded every alternate year for the best essay on some subject connected with engineering.

2. Competitors shall be Graduates in Engineering of the University of Bombay, of not more than seven years' standing from the date of their graduation, on the day prescribed for sending in the Essays.

3. The subject of the Essay shall be—

(a) an engineering work of importance on which the candidate has been actually engaged;

(b) or an engineering subject in which the candidate has made some original discovery or experiments;

(c) or an engineering subject selected by the Syndicate, and notified not less than two years before the day prescribed for sending in the Essays.

4. Each Essay shall be written in English, and shall not contain more than 5,000 words.

5. Each Essay shall be sent in to the University Registrar on or before 1st August of every alternate year beginning 1899.

6. Each Essay shall be signed by the writer, and shall be accompanied by a statement giving his University standing and a declaration that the Essay sent in by him is bond fide his own composition.

7. If the subject of the Essay is (see Rule 3) an engineering work of importance on which the candidate has been actually engaged, the dates between which, and the names of the officers under whom he served on the work, and the duties assigned to him shall be stated.

If the subject of the Essay is one in which the candidate has made some original discovery or experiments, the place at which, and the dates between which the experiments were made should be stated; and if required by the Judges the instruments by means of which the experiments were made should be exhibited to them.

8. The Judges shall be two in number, and shall be nominated by the Syndicate. Their decision shall be final and shall be announced on or about the 15th of October.

9. The Essay for which the Prize is awarded shall become the property of the University Library.

10. The Prize shall not be awarded unless the Judges pronounce an Essay worthy of it.

11. The annual income of the Fund shall be subject to a deduction of 5 per cent. to be contributed to the General Fund of the University.

12. On the occasions when the Prize is not awarded, the money shal be applied by the Syndicate in such manner as they think best fitted for furthering the object of the Endowment.

13. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Prize is awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the Fund, provided the object for which the Prize has been founded is kept in view.

THE UTTAMRAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

In January 1897, in a letter addressed to the Registrar, Bombay University, the Honorary Secretary, Uttamram Memorial Fund Committee, offered to the University a sum of Rs. 5,000 in 3 per cent. Government Paper for the foundation of a Scholarship in the name of the late Mr. Uttamram Narbheram Mehtaji, Head Master of the Kathiawar and Ahmedabad High Schools, to be awarded to the Student from Kathiawar who passes the Matriculation Examination with the highest number of marks in Elementary Science.

The offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate at their Meeting held on the 11th December 1897.

The Scholarship will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations:

1. A Scholarship, to be called "THE UTTAMRAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP," of the value of Rs. 12-8-0 per mensem and tenable for one year, shall be awarded every year by the Syndicate to the candidate who passes the Matriculation Examination with the highest number of marks in Elementary Science from among the candidates who are bond fide natives of Kathiawar.

2. Candidates for the Scholarship must forward their applications for it with their applications for permission to appear at the Matriculation Examination. (Vide Form AAAA.)

3. The candidate, to whom the Scholarship is awarded, must satisfy the Syndicate, within six weeks from the date of election, that he has duly joined a recognized College or Institution.

4. The stipend of the Scholarship shall be payable monthly by the University Registrar on a bill to be drawn by the Head of such recognized College or Institution, who shall certify under his signature on such bill that the scholar is in regular attendance at the College, that his conduct is good, and that his progress in University studies is satisfactory.

5. Should the scholar discontinue his University studies, or be unfavourably reported on by the Head of his College or Institution, it shall be in the discretion of the Syndicate to stop payment of the stipend, or to declare the Scholarship forfeited.

6. The annual income of the Fund shall be subject to a deduction of 5 per cent, to be contributed to the General Fund of the University.

7. Any surplus, which may arise from the vacancy of the Scholarship, during any year or part of a year, shall be added to the next year's Scholarship, so as to increase the monthly stipend payable.

In February 1898, in a letter addressed to the Registrar, Bombay University, the Chairman at a meeting of the subscribers to the Narayan Mahadev Parmanand Memorial Fund, offered to the University a sum of Rs. 6,000 in 3 per cent. Government Paper for the foundation of a Prize in the name of the late Mr. Narayan Mahadev Parmanand, to be awarded annually to the best essay in Marathi or Gujarati alternately under certain conditions. The offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate at their Meeting held on the 22nd July 1898.

The Prize will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations :A Prize, to be called " THE NARAYAN MAHADEV PARMANAND PRIZE," consisting of Rs. (210) two hundred and ten (subject to a deduction of 5 per cent. to be contributed to the General Fund of the University), or of books of the like value, shall be awarded annually to the best Essay in Marathi or Gujarati alternately, on some subject connected with (1) Indian Social Reform, (2) Philosophy and History of Religions, (3) History, (4) Biography, and (5) Indian Economics.

2. Competitors shall be Graduates or any persons who have passed any of the Examinations of the University of Bombay.

3. The subject shall be selected and notified by the Syndicate not less than twelve months before the day for sending in the Essay.

4 The Essays shall be sent in to the University Registrar on or before the fourth Monday in July. Each Essay shall be designated by a motto instead of the writer's name, and shall be accompanied by a sealed cover containing the name of the competitor, his University standing, his Post office address, and a declaration that the Essay sent by him is bond-fide his own composition.

5. The Judges shall be two in number, and shall be nominated annually by the Syndicate. Their decision shall be announced on the fourth Monday in September.

6. The Prize shall not be awarded to any Essay which, in the opinion of the Judges, would not, when printed, be creditable to the University. But if only one Essay be sent in, nothing shall hinder the Judges from awarding to it the Prize, if it appears to them to come up to the proper standard.

7. In the event of there being no Essay worthy of the Prize, it shall be awarded to the Hindu female candidate who passes the Matriculation Examination of that year with the highest number of marks; and in the absence of such a one to the unmarried Hindu male candidate who passes the B.A. Examination with the highest number of marks.

8. On the occasions when the Prize is not awarded, the money shall be applied by the Syndicate in such manner as they shall think best fitted for furthering the object of the endowment.

9. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Prize may be awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the Fund, provided the object for which the Prize has been founded is kept in view.

In January 1898, in a letter addressed to the Registrar, Bombay University, Messrs. Abdul Kayum Ebrahim and Nurdin Ebrahim offered to the University a sum of Rs. 6,000 in 3 per cent. Government Paper for the foundation of a Scholarship or Prize in the name of the late Shet Ebrahim Nurdin, J.P., to be awarded annually to the highest among the Dawudi Bohra candidates at the Matriculation Examination. The offer was accepted B 1964-40
