in 3 per cent. Government Paper for the foundation of a Scholarship in the name of his late wife, to be awarded, whenever vacant, to the highest among Maratha Female Candidates at the Matriculation Examination.

The offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate at their meeting held on the 12th April 1901.

The Scholarship will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations:

A Scholarship, to be called "THE MRS. GANGUBAI R. V.DHAMNASKAR SCHOLARSHIP," of the value of the annual income of the Fund (subject to the 5 per cent. deduction to be mentioned below) tenable for the period required for graduation, viz., 4 years, for Arts, Science or Engineering Course, and 5 years for Medical, shall be awarded, whenever vacant, by the Syndicate to the female Candidate who passes the Matriculation Examination with the highest number of marks from among the Maratha female Candidates on condition that she prosecutes her studies at a recognised College or Institution. Failing a qualified female Candidate, the Scholarship shall be awarded, on like conditions, to a Maratha male Candidate who passes the Matriculation Examination with the highest number of marks.

2. In the event of there being no successful Maratha female or male Candidate the scholarship shall be awarded to a female or male Candidate who obtains the highest number of marks at the Matriculation Examination from ainong the backward classes.*

3. Candidates for the Scholarship must forward their applications for it with their applications for permission to appear at the Matriculation Examination (vide Form AAAJ).

4. The Candidate, to whom the Scholarship is awarded, must satisfy the Syndicate, within six weeks from the date of election, that he has duly joined a recognised Coliege or Institution.

5. The stipend of the Scholarship shall be payable half-yearly by the University Registrar on a bill to be drawn by the Head of such recognised College or Institution who shall certify, under his signature on such bill, that the scholar is in regular attendance at the College, that his conduct is good, and that his progress in University studies is satisfactory.

6. Should the scholar discontinue his University studies, or be unfavourably reported on by the Head of his College or Institution, it shall be in the discretion of the Syndicate to stop payment of the stipend, or to declare the Scholarship forfeited.

7. The annual income of the Fund shall be subject to a deduction of 5 per cent. to be contributed to the General Fund of the University.

8. Any surplus which may arise from the vacancy of the Scholarship during any year or part of a year, shall be applied by the Syndicate in such manner as they shall think best fitted for furthering the object and purposes of the endowment.

9. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Scholarship may be awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the Fund, provided the object for which the Scholarship has been founded is kept in view.

By "backward classes" are meant Kunbi, Patidar, Rajput, Bhandari, Kumbhar, Parit,

Teli and Mahar classes.

XCV.

THE RAO BAHADUR PARVATISHANKAR MANISHANKAR DAVE ADN THE NANDASHANKAR PARVATISHANKAR

DAVE SCHOLARSHIPS.

In January 1901, in a letter addressed to the Registrar, Bombay University, Rao Bahadur Parvatishankar Manishankar Dave offered to the University a sum of Rs. 6,000 in 5 per cent. Bombay Municipal Debentures for the foundation of two Scholarships, one to be called "THE RAO BAHADUR PARVATISHANKAR MANISHANKAR DAVE SCHOLARSHIP" and the other "THE NANDASHANKAR PARVATISHANKAR DAVE SCHOLARSHIP and to be awarded under certain conditions at the Intermediate Arts and First LL.B. Examinations, respectively.

This offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate at their meeting held on the 27th September 1901.

The Scholarships will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations :

A Scholarship to be called "THE RAO BAHADUR PARVATISHANKAR MANISHANKAR DAVE SCHOLARSHIP " of the value of Rs. 13 per mensem, and tenable for one year, shall be awarded every year by the Syndicate to the Vadanagara Vaidik Nagar Brahman, native of the Surat District, who passes the Intermediate Examination in Arts with the highest number of marks and prosecutes his studies for the B.A. Examination. Failing in any year a Vadanagara Vaidik Nagar Brahman, native of the Surat District, the Scholarship shall be continued for one more year to the Candidate who secured it the previous year, and failing any such Candidate, the Scholarship shall be awarded to the Vadanagara Vaidik Nagar Brahman of Gujarat, Kathiawar, Kachha, and other places in that order.

2. A Scholarship to be called "THE NANDASHANKAR PARVATISHANKAR DAVE SCHOLARSHIP” of the value of Rs. 10 per mensem, and tenable for one year, shall be awarded annually by the Syndicate to the Vadanagara Vaidik Nagar Brahman, native of the Surat District, who passes the First LL.B. Examination with the highest number of marks and prosecutes his studies for the Second LL.B. Examination, preference being given when there are Candidates who have passed the First LL.B. Examination in different years to the Candidate who has passed earlier than the rest. Failing in any year a Vadanagara Vaidik Nagar Brahman, native of the Surat District, the Scholarship shall be awarded to the Vadanagara Vaidik Nagar Brahman of Gujarat, Kathiawar, Kachha, and other places in that order.

3. Candidates for the Scholarships must forward their applications for the same with their applications for permission to appear at the Intermediate Arts or First LL.B. Examination (vide Forms AÄÄK and AA AL).

In February 1901, in a letter addressed to the Registrar, Bombay University, Mr. Bomanji Dinshaw Petit, the Chairman of the Sub-committee of the subscribers to the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, Third Baronet, Memorial Fund, offered to the University a sum of Rs. 6,000 in 4 per cent. Bombay Port Trust Bonds, for the foundation of a Prize to be called, "THE SIR JAMSETJEE JEEJEEBHOY, THIRD BARONET, PRIZE," to be awarded every tenth year to the best Essay on some Iranian subject.

The offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate at their Annual Meeting held on the 25th January 1902.

The Prize will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations:

A Prize to be called "THE SIRJAMSETJEE JEEJEE BHOY, THIRD Baronet, PRIZE," of the value of Rs. 1,100 shall be awarded every tenth year to the best Essay by a University student in accordance with the subjoined conditions.

2. Competitors shall be graduates or undergraduates or members of any University.

3. The subject of the Essay. shall be Iranian. It may be on all matters appertaining to ancient Iran, such as its history, literature, science, art, religion, &c. It may be the translation of an hitherto untranslated Avesta,

Pahlavi, Cuneiform or Persian book or inscriptions, gems, jewels, &c., of general Iranian interest, or the preparation of an edition-collated or uncollated-of an unpublished manuscript.

4. The subject shall be selected and notified by the Syndicate not less than eighteen months before the day for sending in the Essay.

5. Each Essay shall be written in English and sent to the University Registrar on or before the 1st of July. Each Essay shall be signed by the writer and shall be accompained by a statement giving his University standing, if any, his Post Office address, and a declaration that the Essay sent in by him is bonâ fide his own composition.

6. The Judges shall be two in number and shall be nominated by the Syndicate. Their decision shall be announced on the fourth Monday in November. The honorarium for each Judge shall be ten guineas.

7. The Prize shall not be awarded to any Essay which, in the opinion of the Judges, would not, when printed, be creditable to the University. But if only one Essay be sent in, nothing shall hinder the Judges from awarding to it the Prize if it appears to them to come up to the proper standard.

8. The said Essay, translation or edition shall be printed and published by the University, provided always that all expenses of, or incidental to the printing and publication of the work shall not exceed one-fourth of the total amount available after ten years.

9. The annual income of the Fund shall be subject to a deduction of 5 per cent. to be contributed to the General Fund of the University.

10. On the occasions when the Prize is not awarded, the money shall be applied by the Syndicate in such manner as they shall think best fitted for furthering the object and purposes of the endowment.

11. The Senate shall have the power, whenever it may think fit, to modify or alter the terms upon which the Prize may be awarded, or otherwise to deal with the income of the Fund, provided the object for which the Prize has been founded is kept in view.

XCVII.

THE RAJARAM GOVINDRAM SCHOLARSHIP.

In September 1901, in a letter addressed to the Registrar, Bombay University, Mr. Motilal Narotumdas offered to the University a sum of Rs. 6,000 for the foundation of a Scholarship to be called "THE RAJARAM GOVINDRAM SCHOLARSHIP," to be awarded annually to the highest among Visa Nagar Bania Candidates at the Matriculation Examination.

The offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate at their Meeting held on the 19th June 1902.

The Scholarship will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations::

A Scholarship to be entitled "THE RAJARAM GOVINDRAY SCHOLARSHIP' of the value of Rs. 15 per mensem, tenable for one year, shall be awarded every year to the Candidate who passes the Matriculation Examination

Candidate passing the Intermediate Science Examination with the highest number of marks in the First Class.

The offer was accepted with the best thanks of the Senate at their Meeting held on the 19th June 1902.

The Scholarship will be awarded in accordance with the following Regulations:

A Scholarship to be called "THE SIR DINSHAW MANOCKJEE PETIT (FIRST BARONET) SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP" of the value of the annual income of the Fund (subject to the 5 per cent. deduction to be mentioned below), and tenable for one year, shall be awarded every year by the Syndicate to the Candidate who passes the Intermediate Examination for the Degree of B. Sc. in the First Class, with the highest number of marks, and is recommended for the Scholarship by the Examiners, on condition that he continues his studies in Science for the Examination for the Degree of B.Sc. during his tenure of the Scholarship, at one of the Colleges or Institutions recognised by the University of Bombay.

2. In case two Candidates are bracketed together in any year for getting the highest number of marks as aforesaid, the Syndicate may, in such event, award the Scholarship to the one who, on account of his pecuniary circumstances, may, in their opinion, be in greater need of the help of the Scholarship.

3. Any surplus which may arise from the vacancy of the Scholarship during any year or part of a year shall, from time to time, be allowed by the Syndicate to accumulate until it amounts to Rs. 1,000 when the same shall be invested in Government Promissory Loan Notes and added to the corpus of the original donation.

4. The Candidate, to whom the Scholarship is awarded, must satisfy the Syndicate, within six weeks from the date of election, that he has duly joined a recognised College or Institution.

5. The stipend of the Scholarship shall be payable half-yearly by the University Registrar on a bill to be drawn by the Head of such recognised College or Institution who shall certify, under his signature on such bill that the scholar is in regular attendance at the College, that his conduct is good, and that his progress in University studies is satisfactory.
