Man need not deplore his condition on earth, since he can improve and beautify it. He is not lost in this world, since he is under the yoke of reasonable and beneficent laws. It has been given to him to submit and to understand them. If he cannot overthrow them, he can, by obeying them, take a share in them ; he can even, in a certain measure, unite himself to him who has made them, and who reveals them equally by virtue and by crime. It is not, therefore, a ruler or a tyrant that his heart appeals to it is rather a father; and he can say to himself that far from being an orphan or a waif in this world, he may live in it, like one of a large family, where, since he has the second place, he occupies a noble position.

HORACE: Satires; PLINY: Letters, Books I, II and 111.
SECTION I.

1. Translate :

(a) Sic festinanti semper locupletior obstat,

Ut, cum carceribus missos rapit ungula currus,
Instat equis auriga suos vincentibus, illum
Praeteritum temnens extremos inter euntem.
Inde fit, ut raro, qui se vixisse beatum
Dicat et exacto contentus tempore vita
Cedat uti conviva satur, reperire queamus.
Jam satis est: ne me Crispini scrinia lippi
Compilasse putes, verbum non amplius addam.

Explain "Crispini lippi."

(b)

Nam si natura juberet

A certis annis aevum remeare peractum

Atque alios legere ad fastum quoscunque parentis
Optaret sibi quisque meis contentus honestos
Fascibus et sellis nollem mihi sumere, demens
Judicio volgi, sanus fortasse tuo, quod

Nollem onus haud unquam solitus portare molestum.
Nam mihi continuo major quaerenda foret res
Atque salutandi plures ducendus et unus

Et comes alter, uti ne solus rusve peregreve

Exirem; plures calones atque caballi

Pascendi, ducenda petorrita.

What do you gather from the Satires regarding Horace's early educa tion ?

(c) Ergo ubi me in montis et in arcem ex urbe removi,
Quid prius illustrem satiris musaqu que pedestri?
Nec mala me ambitio perdit nec plumbeus Auster
Autumnusque gravis, Libitinae quaestus acerbae.
Matutine pater seu Jane libentius audis,
Unde homines operum primos vitaeque labores
Instituunt, sic Dis placitum, tu carminis esto
Principium. Romae sponsorem me rapis 'heia!
Ne prior officio quisquam respondeat, urge'
Sive Aquilo radit terras seu bruma nivalem
Interiore diem gyro trahit, ire necesse est.
Postmodo quod mi obsit, clare certumque locuto,
Luctandum in turba et facienda injuria tardis.
Discuss the derivation of the word "Satira."

2. Translate with explanatory notes:

(b)

Qui nisi, cum tristes misero venere Kalendae,
Mercedem aut nummos unde unde extricat, amaras

Quo fit, ut omnis

Votiva pateat veluti descripta tabella
