CHEMISTRY OF AGRICULTURE.

N.B.-The two Sections should be kept separate.

Definite chemical changes should be represented by equations,

SECTION I.

1. State fully the different kinds of food required by plants and their 12 sources. How are they assimilated and transformed? What useless matters are excreted?

2. Describe the chemical changes taking place during germination and 12 state the different conditions influencing it.

3. Explain the metabolic changes by which food-stuffs are converted 14 into animal tissue.

What do you understand by retrogressive metamorphosis and what are the conditions affecting it?

4. What functions are played by micro-organisms in agriculture ? Explain the different fermentation processes of the dairy.

SECTION II.

5. Give a concise description of the mechanical analysis of the soil and 13 state for what end it is made.

Trace the origin of potash and of clay in the soil from the so-called primitive and the trap rocks.

6. Discuss the reasons why the absorptive power of the soil both for 13 phosphoric acid and for alkalis and alkaline earths is maintained to be more of a chemical than of a physical nature. Explain how it affects the fertility of the soil.

SURVEYING and LEVELLING.

N.B.-The answers must be illustrated by sketches as far as possible.

What do you understand by Representative fraction and explain the principle of Vernier scale and construct a scale of 1/100 to show feet and inches.

3. Describe briefly the method of making a survey by the chain only. 10 Mention how its accuracy is tested from time to time and the purpose as well as the situations for which it is most suitable.

4. Briefly describe the construction and mode of using the Prismatic 10 compass and explain wherein the surveying compass differs from the Prismatic compass.

5. Describe the Y level, its corrections, and adjustments and the method 12 of using it. Also state wherein it differs from the Dumpy level. Mention the sources of errors in levelling and how they are minimized.

6. Describe the principle of contouring and the advantages of this mode 12 of survey. Explain contour lines and the method of conducting a contour survey of an extensive area in a hilly country.

7. Describe two of the methods of finding the distance of an inaccessible 10 object situated on the other side of a river.

8. Draw a plan of a seven sided field from the following measurements 16 on a scale of 100 feet to an inch and find the angles at D, E and F:

3. Name the diseases affecting the Jowari crop and describe any one of 20 them.

4. Give the approximate weights of Nitrogen and Phosphoric Acid 25 removed from the soil by a sugarcane crop, and state the quantity of Safflowercake that would recoup the loss of Nitrogen thus occasioned.

5. State the quantity of manure ordinarily applied per acre in the 15 case of the following manures:

Farmyard manure; Castor cake; Pondrette.
