11. Translate into English :

ऐन मध्यरात्रीं शोणनदीच्या कांठच्या उंचवट्यावर बसलेल्या एका तरुण पुरुषाचे मनांत अशा प्रकारचे मूड घेण्याविषयींचे विचार घोळत होते. त्याच्या हृदयांतील क्रोधाग्नी अतिशय भडकला होता व तो अगर्दी वाजवी आहे, असें जाणूनच सर्व सृष्टिही त्याच्याप्रमाणे क्रुद्ध झालेली दिसत होती. पूर आल्यामुळे नदीचें

पात्र विस्तृत होऊन तिच्या प्रवाहास जोरही विलक्षण आला होता.
आकाश ढगांनीं व्यापून गेल्यामुळे चोहोंकडे निबिड अंधकार पडला
होता; पाऊस धो धो पडत होता आणि वारा असा सोसाट्यानें
वहात होता की, त्याचा घो घो शब्द ऐकून एकाद्या धीट माणसा-
चीही छाती दडपून जावी. आकाशांत मधून मधून वीज होत
होती, तिच्या प्रकाशामुळे मात्र हा भोवतालचा उग्र देखावा दृष्टीस
पडे. विजेच्या चकचकाटानंतर गडगडाट इतका जोरानें होई की,
त्यामुळें व वान्याच्या सोसाट्यामुळे मोठमोठ्या इमारतीही जमिन-
दोस्त होतात की काय, अशी भीति वाटे.

मित्राच्या अनीतीनें जो सर्वस्वी बुडाला, त्याच्या चित्तांत शांति
उत्पन्न न होतां क्रोधाचाच विशेष जोर होऊन, भोवतालच्या भयंकर
देखाव्यास अनुरूप अर्शी कृष्ण कृत्यें करण्यास तो प्रवृत्त झाल्यास
नवल तें काय ?

The mere material wealth bequeathed to us by our forefathers forms but an insignificant item in the sum of our inheritance. Our birthright is made up of something far more imperishable. It consists of the sum of useful efforts of human skill and labour, which were not transmitted by learning but by teaching and example. One generation taught another and thus art and handicraft, the knowledge of mechanical appliances and of materials, continued to be preserved. This natural heritage of the human race-one of the important instruments of civilization-we cannot enjoy, unless we ourselves work either with hand or head. But apart from mere physical work we have a higher work to do, viz., of spreading truth and civilization, of diminishing suffering and relieving the poor, of helping the weak and enabling them to help themselves.

1. Translate into English :~

નરસિંહમેહેતા ધેર આવ્યા પછી પેહેલાં પેાતાના કાકાના ધરમાંજ જુદું ઘર માંડીને રહ્યા હાય એમ જણાય છે. ધેર સ્ત્રી આવી ત્યારે ખાવાપીવાને પણ સાંસાં, ને તેની વહુ જાતે નાગરેણુ એટલે સહજમાં સતેાષ ઉપજે પણ નહીં, તેથી મેહેતાને પ્રથમ અનેક વિટંબણા પડેલી. નાગરણે પોતાની રીત પ્રમાણે મેહેવાને ઉદ્યમ કરવાને અનેક પ્રકારે મેહેણાંતાણાં મારીને પોતાની સ્ત્રીજાત બતાવેલી એમ જણાય છે. મેહેતાએ ગૃહસ્થાશ્રમ માંડયા પછી પેહેલે તે માણેકબાઈએ પેાતાને મહિયરથી લાવીને ધરસંસાર નિભાવ્યા હતા, પણ જેમ જેમ વિપત્તિ પડતી ગઈ તેમ તેમ તે વધારે ગભરાતી હતી. મેહેતાને અનેક પ્રકારના ઠેક પાડીને વખતેા વખત પેાતાને પહેર જઈ કલ્પાંત કરતી. આ વખતે પેાતાના પિત્રાઈ સાથે કઈક અણુબનાવ થવાથી, વળી નાગરી ન્યાતમાં મેહેતા નિદાવા લાગવાથી, તે ઘરમાં રાજરાજ સાધુસંતનેા અખા એકઠા થતા તેથી તે પોતાના ઘરમાંથી નીકળીને શેતુર બહાર સહકુટ બ આવી રહ્યા હતા. આ સ્થળે મેહેતીને રેહવું પસંદ પડયું નહીં તેથી તે કેટલાક મહિના સુધી મેહેતાથી જુદી પેાતાને પહેર રહી, પણ યાડે દિવસે ન્યાતજાતની નિદાથી સમને પાછી ગઈ.

10. Translate into idiomatic Gujarati any one of the following passages:— 20

(a) Education will never be in a healthy condition so long as the teaching of the home is at utter variance with the teaching of the school or college. Any one who is acquainted with the conditions of an ordinary Hindu family at its home must have been struck with the bewildering contrast between the domestic environment of the young Hindu amidst which his active life is spent and the intellectual atmosphere he breathes during his college hours. There is nothing radically wrong in the young Hindu's home associations. But the life he leads at home does, at times, present a painful contradiction to what is taught to him in the lecture room. The Professors, however, in delivering their lectures merely do their official duty, but they make no attempt to exert a moral influence over their pupils to form their sentiments and habits or to control and guide their passions.

(6) Early in the action, he had been advised to seek safety in flight, but he did not think it honourable to leave his friend at such a critical juncture; but when he found that his friend had disappeared, he turned his horse from the field and reached the neighbouring village which was already crowded with fugitives. He would have at once proceeded further but was totally unacquainted with the country, Fortunately for him he fell in with a Brahman who strongly advised him to dismount from his horse and disguise himself, it being his only chance of escape, He therefore divested himself of all his clothes and accoutrements with the exception of a small cloth round his loins and at nightfall his new acquaintance, with a few followers, guided him westward. They had hardly proceeded a kos when they fell in with a party of the enemy who stopped and searched them; but although in the scuffle some of the followers were killed, he and his friend escaped uninjured.
