Abraham, Abraham.] See verse 1. And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses; and he said, Here am I. Ex. iii. 4. And the Lord came and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel: then Samuel answered, Speak, for thy servant heareth. 1 Sa. iii. 10. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? Ac. ix. 4. And when we were all fallen to the earth (said Paul), 1 heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying, in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? Ac. xxvi. 14.

willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. 2 Co. viii. 12. God was able to raise him (Isaac) up even from the dead. He. xi. 19.

Now I know that thou fearest, &c.] Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place, &c. They will slay me for my wife's 11 And the angel of the Lord called, &c.] sake (said Abraham). And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad: In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth by myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for be blessed, because that Abraham obeyed my because that thou hast done this thing, and voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, hast not withheld thy son, thine only son; my statutes, and my laws. Ge. xxvi. 5. And that in blessing I will bless thee, &c. Ge. Joseph said unto them (his brethren), This do xxii. 12. 16, 17. See chap. xvi. 7. 9, 10, and and live, for I fear God. Gen. xlii. 18. And com. And the angel of God called to Hagar Moses said unto the people, Fear not, for God out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth is come to prove you. Er. xx. 20. Only fear thee? &c. Ge. xxi. 17 and com. the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he hath done for you: but if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king. 1 Sa. xii. 24, 25. And Samuel saith (unto Saul), Hath the Lord as great delight in burntofferings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sa. xv. 22. Yea, even their servants bare rule over the people, but so do not I, because of the fear of God. Ne. v. 15. Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. Job xxviii. 28. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shail perish. Ps. i. 6. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Ps. ii. 11. What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him, and he will shew them his covenant. Ps. XXV. 12. 14. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Ps. cxi. 10. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. Ps. cxii. 1. The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy. Ps. cxlvii. 11. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Pr. i. 7. It shall be well with them that fear God, but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he feareth not before God. Ec. viii. 12, 13. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Ec. xii. 13. Sanctify the Lord God of hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Je. xxxii. 40. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of

12 Lay not thine hand upon the lad, &c.] And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sa. xv. 22. He shall deliver thee in six troubles, yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. Job v. 19. They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind. Je. xix. 5. Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, and calves of a year old? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth God require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Mi. vi. 6. 8. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Co. x. 13. For if there be first a

only son, from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, 13 and, behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the 14 name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, in the

righteousness arise with healing in his wings. Mal. iv. 2. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Ma. v. 16. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he that taketh not his cross and followeth after me is not worthy of me. Ma. x. 37, 38. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Ma. xvi. 24. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundred fold, and shall inherit everlasting life. Mat. xix. 29. Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea, and Galilee, and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. Ac. ix. 31. Wherefore, we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and godly fear. He. xii. 28. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Ja. ii. 18. Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? Ja. ii. 20, 21. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. Re. xix. 5.

Seeing thou hast not withheld, &c.] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jn. iii. 16. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Ro. v. 8. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Ro. viii. 32. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him: herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 Jn. iv. 9, 10.

13 Behind him a ram.] My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt sacrifice. Ge. xxii. 8. and com. Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt-offering and sin-offering hast

thou not required. I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart. Ps. xl. 6. 8. Then thou spakest in vision to the holy One, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people: I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him. Ps. lxxxix. 19, 20. Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand and when ye turn to the left. Is. xxx. 21. God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Co. x. 13. But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raised the dead; who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver; in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us. 2 Co. i. 9, 10.

In the stead of his son.] Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened; for even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Co. v. 7, 8. (Ye were redeemed) with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, who verily was fore-ordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. 1 Pe. i. 19, 20.

14 Called the name of that place.] And "she" ("Hagar") called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me; wherefore the well (where the angel of the Lord found her) was called Beer-lahai-roi. Ge. xvi. 13, 14. and com. And "he" ("Jacob") called the name of that place Beth-el, but the name of that city was called Luz at the first. Ge. xxviii. 19. And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nisi. Ex. xvii. 15. Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovahshalom. Ju. vi. 24. Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mispeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer. 1 Sa. vii. 12. "It" ("the city of Jerusalem") was round about eighteen thousand measures, and the name of the city from that day shall be The Lord is there. Ez. xlviii. 35.

Jehovah-jirek.] My son, God will provide himself a lamb, &c. Verse 8. And behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. Verse 13. See Ex. xvii. 15. preced. com.

myself have I sworn, saith the Lord; for because thou hast done 17 this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea-shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.] For the Lord shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up or left. De. xxxii. 36. Our fathers trusted in thee; they trusted, and thou didst deliver them: they cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. Ps. xxii. 4, 5. If it be so (said Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego), our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. Da. iii. 17. Be in pain and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail; for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon: there shalt thou be delivered; there the Lord shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies. Mi. iv. 10. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth. Jn. i. 14. For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life; but we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver, in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us. 2 Co. i. 8, 9, 10. And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness. God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Ti. iii. 16.

15 The second time.] See verse 11.

16 By myself have I sworn, &c.] I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee. Ge. xii. 2. and com. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac. Ps. cv. 9. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Is. xlv. 23. For I have sworn by myself, saith the Lord, that Bozrah shall be come a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse, and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes. Je. xlix. 13. The Lord of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee (Babylon) with men, as with caterpillars, and they shall lift up a shout against

thee. Je. li. 14. The Lord God hath sworn by himself, saith the Lord, the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces; therefore will I deliver up the city, with all that is therein. Am. vi. 8. The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, that he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear. Lu. i. 73. For the promise that he should be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith; for if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect. Ro. iv. 13, 14. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, saying, Surely, blessing, I will bless thee, and multiplying, I will multiply thee. He. vi. 13, 14.

17 In blessing I will bless, &c.] See chap. xii. 2. and com. Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. Let people serve "thee" (" Jacob"), and nations bow down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down unto thee. Gen. xxvii. 28, 29. His (Joseph's) bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob. Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee (said Jacob), and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts and of the womb the blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors, unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren. Ge. xlix. 25, 26. And all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee (said Moses to Israel), if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. De. xxviii. 2. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in hea venly places in Christ. Ep. 1. 3.

I will multiply thy seed, &c.] I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Ge. xiii. 16. and com. and xii. 2, 3.

Shore.] And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-Geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red Sea. 1 Ki. ix. 26.

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; be- 18 cause thou hast obeyed my voice. So Abraham returned unto his 19 young men; and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba. these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah,

Thy seed shall possess, &c.] Be thou (Rebekah) the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. Ge. xxiv. 60. There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city. Nu. xxiv. 17, 19. Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him (their stubborn and rebellious son which will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother), and bring him out unto the elders of his city and unto the gate of his place (to be stoned). De. xxi. 19, &c. Be strong and of good courage, for unto this people (the Israelites) shalt thou (Joshua) divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Jos. i. 6. &c. And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not, for I have delivered them (the Amorites) into thine hand: there shall not a man of them stand before thee. Jos. x. 8, &c. And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines and subdued them, and he smote Moab and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground. 2 Sa. viii. 1, 2, &c. And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. 2 Sa. x. 19, &c. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Ps. ii. 8, 9. "He" ("Solomon") shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth. They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust. Ps. lxxii. 8, 9. And (thou God) hast given "them" ("the Jews") this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. Je. xxxii. 22. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces, and consume all those kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest (said Daniel) that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter. wound (Israel's) is incurable. He is come unto the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem. Mi. i. 9. And (God) hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David. That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. Lu. i. 69. 74, 75. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Co. xv. 57. And the seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever. Re. xi. 15.

18 In thy seed, &c.] See chap. xii. 3. and com. Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the Gospel of God, concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh. Ro. i. 3. They which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham, Ga. iii. 9. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Ga. iii. 18. 29.

Obeyed my voice, &c.] God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham; and he said, Behold, here I am. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son (at the command of God). Ge. xxii. 1. 10. Because that Abraham obeyed my voice (I will make thy, Isaac's, seed to multiply). Ge. xxvi. 5. 4. Them that honour me (saith the Lord) I will honour. 1 Sa. ii. 30. Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people. Je. vii. 23. the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. He. xi. 1, &c. 19 Beer-sheba, &c.] See chap. xxi. 31. and

Faith is

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. Pr. xxv. 25. Milcah.] See chap. xi. 29. and com. I am (said Rebekah) the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. Ge. xxiv. 24.

Nahor.] See chap. xi. 26, and com. And the servant (of Abraham) took ten camels, and he arose and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. Ge. xxiv. 10, &c. The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us (Laban and Jacob). Ge. xxxi. 53.

21 she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor; Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. 23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to 24 Nahor, Abraham's brother. And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

CHAPTER XXIII.

1 AND Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these 2 were the years of the life of Sarah. And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham 3 came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. And Abraham

21 Huz.] There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. Job i. 1. Buz.] Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel, the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram. Against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God. Job xxxii. 2.

Aram.] And he (Abraham's servant) arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. Ge. xxiv. 10. And he (Balaam) took up his parable and said, Balak the king of Moab has brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east. Nu. xxiii. 7. To the chief musician upon Shushan-eduth, Michtam of David, when he strove with Aram-naharaim, and with Aram-zobah, when Joab returned, and smote of Edom, in the valley of salt, twelve thousand. Title of Ps. lx.

23 Bethuel.] And it came to pass before "he" ("the servant of Abraham") had done speaking, that behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother; and she said, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. And I (said the servant) asked her, Whose daughter art thou? and she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him. And I put the ear-ring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. Ge. xxiv. 15. 24. 47. And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian, of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian. Ge. xxv. 20. Arise, go (said Isaac to Jacob) to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, thy mother's father, and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban, thy mother's brother. And Isaac sent away Jacob, and he went to Padan-aram, unto

Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother

of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother. Ge. xxviii. 2. 5.

Rebekah.] Behold, Rebekah is before thee (said Laban and Bethuel); take her, and go, let her be thy master's son's wife. And they (her brother and mother) blessed Rebekah,

and said unto her, Thou art our sister. And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. Ge. xxiv. 51. 60. 67, When Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac, it was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. Ro. ix. 10. 12,

24 Concubine.] And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. Ge. xvi. 3. and com. The Lord will destroy the house of the proud, but he will establish the border of the widow. Pr. xv. 25.

CHAP. XXIII.-1 Sarah was an hundred, &c.] Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? Ge. xvii. 17.

2 Kirjath-arba.] And Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. See chap. xiii. 18. and com. (Joshua) had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and the king thereof. Jos. x. 39. And Kirjath-arba (which is Hebron), in the mountain of Judah (was one of the refuge cities). Jos. xx. 7. And Judah went against the Cananites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba.) Ju. i. 10. 1 Sa. xx. 31. And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah, was seven years and six months. 2 Sa. ii. 11. So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron, and king David made a league with them in Hebron, before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel. In Hebron he reigned over Judah he reigned thirty and three years over all seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem Israel and Judah. 2 Sa. v. 3. 5. And to the namely, Hebron, the city of refuge, &c. &c. sons of Aaron they gave the cities of Judah, 1 Chr. vi. 57.
