CHAPTER XXIV.

1 AND Abraham was old, and well stricken in age and the Lord 2 had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put,I pray 3 thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear by

CHAP. XXIV.-1 Was old, &c.] See com. on "old and well stricken." Ge. xviii. 11. And Abraham was an hundred years old when his son Isaac was born unto him. Ge. xxi. 5. And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife. Ge. xxv. 20. Now king David was old and striken in years, and they covered him with clothes, but he got no heat. 1 Ki. i. 1.

Blessed Abraham.] See com. chap. xii. 2. and chap. xiii. 2. The arms of his hands were made strong even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee (said Jacob to Joseph), and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts and the womb. Ge. xlix. 25. Wealth and riches shall be in his house (who feareth the Lord), and his righteousness endureth for ever. Ps. cxii. 3. Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you; for I (the Lord) called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. Is. li. 2. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Ga. iii. 9. Blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. Ep. i. 3.

2 Eldest servant.] See com. chap. xv. 2. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour. 1 Ti. v. 17.

Ruled over all.] And the servant (of Abraham) took ten camels of the camels of his master and departed, for all the goods of his master were in his hand. Ge. xxiv. 10. And Joseph found grace in his (Potiphar's) sight; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand, and he left all that he had in Joseph's hand. Ge. xxxix. 4. 6. My master (said Joseph) wotteth not what is with me in the house; there is none greater in his house than I. Ge. xxxix. 8, 9. And he (Joseph) commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill "the men's" (" his brethren's") sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. Ge. xliv. 1.

Put, I pray thee, thy hand, &c.] And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter. Ge. xxiv. 9. And “he” (“ Israel") called his son (Joseph), and said to him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not,

I pray thee, in Egypt. Ge. xlvii. 29. And all the princes and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king. 1 Ch. xxix. 24. We have given the hand to the Egyp tians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. La. v. 6.

3 Swear, &c.] See chap. xiv. 22. and com. xxi. 23. And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another (Abimelech and Isaac). Ge. xxvi. 31. And he (Jacob) said, Swear unto me: and he (Joseph) sware unto him. Ge. xlvii. 31. And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. Ge. 1. 25. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Ex. xx. 7. If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast to keep, and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it, there shall an oath of the Lord be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods. Ex. xxii. 10, 11. Make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth. Ex. xxiii. 13. And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God. Le. xix. 12. Then the priest shall charge the woman (accused of adultery), with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The Lord make thee a curse and an oath among the people (if thou be defiled). Nu. v. 21. To "him" ("God") shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. De. x. 20. And I (Nehemiah) contended with them (the Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammor, and of Moab), and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves. Ne. xiii. 25. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my month in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall swear. Is. xlv. 23. Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, but not in truth nor in righteousness. Is. xlviii. 1. He that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth. Is. lxv.16. Thus saith the Lord, If “they,” (“grine evil neighbours") will diligently learn the ways

the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to 4 my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. And the servant 5 said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? And Abraham said unto him, 6 Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. The Lord 7 God of heaven, which took me from my father's house, and from

of my people, to swear by my name, The Lord liveth (as they taught my people to swear by Baal), then shall they be built up in the midst of my people. Je. xii. 16. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and them that worship the host of heaven from the house-tops, and them that worship, and that swear by the Lord, and that swear by Malcham. Zep. i. 4, 5.

The God of heaven.] See chap. xiv. 22. and com. on "the Most High God." And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone; thou hast made heaven and earth. 2 Ki. xix. 15. Huram (king of Tyre) said moreover, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, that made heaven and earth. 2 Ch. ii. 12. Thou, even thou art Lord alone: thou hast made heaven, and the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, and thou preservest them all. Ne. ix. 6. Ye (who fear the Lord) are blessed of the Lord which made heaven and earth. Ps. cxv. 15. The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. Je. x. 11.

That thou shalt not take a wife, &c.] See chap. vi. 2. 4. and com. And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite; which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah. Ge. xxvi. 34, 35. And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan: Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father, and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother. And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father, took unto the wives which he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, &c. Ge. xxviii. 1, 2. 8. Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you. 2 Co. vị. 17.

4 To my kindred.] And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters; and Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor,

and Haran, &c. Ge. xi. 25, 26. Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred; unto thy seed will I give this land (Canaan). Ge. xii. 1. 7. It was told Abraham, saying, Behold Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor: and Bethuel begat Rebekah; and his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah. Ge. xxii. 20. 24.

5 Peradventure the woman, &c.] And they (her mother and brother) called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? and she said, I will go. Ge. xxiv. 58. Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick as heretofore (said Pharaoh): let them (the Israelites) go and gather straw for themselves. Ex. v. 7. For if thou (Pharaoh) refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still (said Moses), behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thy cattle, &c. Ex. ix. 2. Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge, but a fool layeth open his folly. Pr. xiii. 16. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few. Ec. v. 2.

6 Beware that thou bring not, &c.] Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Ga. v. 1. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. He. x. 39. By faith "he" ("Abraham”) sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country. (Ancient believers) confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. He. xi. 9. 13. But now they (the believers of old) desire a better country, that is an heavenly. He. xi. 16. For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning: but it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. 2 Pe. ii. 20. 22.

7 Lord God of heaven.] The Lord God of heaven hath given me (said Cyrus) all the kingdoms of the earth. Ezra i. 2. And in

the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son 8 from thence. And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not 9 my son thither again. And the servant put his hand under the

the days of these kings, shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed. Da. ii. 44. I am an Hebrew (said Jonah), and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. Jon. i. 9. And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand, and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Took me from my father's house.] See chap. xii. 1. 7. and com.

Which spake unto me, &c.] See chap. xiii. 15. and com. By myself have I sworn (saith the Lord), for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, that in blessing I will bless thee, &c. Ge. xxii. 16. And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. Ge. xxii. 18. And it shall be when the Lord shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, &c. which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service" ("the feast of unleavened bread") in this month (the month Abib). Ex. xiii. 5. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidest unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, &c. Ex. xxxii. 13. Now (said Moses to the Lord), if thou shalt kill all "this people" ("the Israelites") in the wilderness, as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness. Nu. xiv. 15, 16. Doubtless (saith the Lord to the unbelieving murmurers) ye shall not come into the land concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the sun of Nun. Nu. xiv. 30. Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upwards, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me. Nu. xxxii. 11. Behold, I have set the land before you go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers. De. i. 8. Be strong and of good courage, for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Jos. i. 6. I made you to go up out of Egypt (said the angel of the Lord to the

Israelites at Bochim), and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers. Ju. ii. 1. By faith he (Abraham) sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country. He. xi. 9.

Angel before thee.] Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared: for mine angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, &c. &c. and I will cut them off. Ex. xxiii. 20. 23. And I will send an angel before thee, and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, &c. &c. Ex. xxxiii. 2. I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Ps. xxxii. 8. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Ps. xxxiv. 7. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Ps. lxxiii. 24. Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. Ps. ciii. 20. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not to thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Pr. iii. 5, 6. In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them. Is. lxiii. 9. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salva tion? He. i. 14.

8 Clear from this my oath.] But if her father disallow "her" ("who has made a vow unto the Lord") in the day that he heareth, not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand; and the Lord shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her. Nu. xxx. 5. And the men said unto her (Rahab), We will be blameless of thine oath which thou hast made us swear: if thou utter this our business, then "we" ("the spies on Jericho") will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. Jos. ii. 17. 20, This we will do to "them" (“the Gibeonites”); we (the princes of the people) will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. Jos. ix. 20. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John viii. 32.

Only bring not.] See verses 4, 5, 6. The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran. Ac. vii. 2.

10. All the goods, &c.] See verse 2. and There is none greater in this house (of Pharaoh) than I: and the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison, and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it; the keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand. Ge. xxxix. 9. 22, 23.

Mesopotamia.] An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord. De. xxiii. 3. Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him (Othniel), and he judged Israel, and went out to war; and the Lord delivered Chushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, into his hand. Ju. iii. 8. 10. And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah. 1 Ch. xix. 6. How hear we every man in our own tongue wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, &c. &c. and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, &c. Ac. ii. 9.

City of Nahor.] See chap. xi. 31. with com. on Haran, &c. And Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the Ge. xxix. 1.

11 Kneel down.] And he (Jacob) said unto him (Esau), My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me, and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die: let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant, and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir. Ge. xxxiii. 13, 14. A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. xii. 10.

Pr.

Women go out to draw water, &c.] Behold I stand here by the well of water (said Abraham's servant); and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water and she (Rebekah) hasted and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water. Ge. xxiv. 13. 20. Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and VOL. I.

they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. Ex. ii. 16. And as "they" (" Saul and his servant”) went up the hill to the city they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the "seer” (“Samuel") here? 1 Sa. ix. 11. Jesus, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on "the well" ("Jacob's well): there cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. John iv. 7.

12 0 Lord God of my master, &c.] Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth. Ge. xxiv. 27. See chap. xv. 1. and com.; xvii. 7, 8. and com. ; xxiv. 42. And behold the Lord stood above it (Jacob's ladder), and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father. Ge. xxviii. 13. Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, had been with me, surely thou (Laban) hadst sent me away now empty. Ge. xxxi. 42. And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, I am not worthy of the least of all thy mercies. Ge. xxxii. 9, 10. I am the God of thy father Abraham (said the Lord to Moses): thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The God of Abraham, &c. hath sent me unto you. Ex. iii. 6. 15. It came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, &c. let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel. 1 Ki. xviii. 36. And he (Elisha) took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? 2 Ki. ii. 14. Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Mat. vii. 7. I am the God of Abraham, &c. &c. God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Mat. xxii. 32.

I pray thee.] And thou shalt bring "it" ("venison, savoury meat of the kids") to thy father (said Rebekah to Jacob), that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death. Ge. xxvii. 10. And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he (Joseph) may send away your other brother and Benjamin. Ge. xliii. 14. O Lord, I (Nehemiah) beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant; and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. Ne. i. 11. Then the king said unto me, For what dost N

13 shew kindness unto my master Abraham. Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come 14 out to draw water: And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness

thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. Ne. ii. 4. Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass. Ps. xxxvii. 5. Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. Ps. xc. 16. And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. Ps. xc. 17. Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Ps. cxviii. 25. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. Ps. cxxii. 6. Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it; except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. Ps. cxxvii. 1. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Pr. iii. 6. In every thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. Phi. iv. 6. What thanks can we render to God again for you, &c.? night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith: now God himself, and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you. 1 Th. iii. 10, 11,

13 I stand here by the well.] Behold, I stand by the well of water (said Abraham's servant). Ge. xxiv. 43. Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass. Ps. xxxvii. 5. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Pr. iii. 6.

The daughters of the men of the city.] See verse 11. And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she kept them and it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. Ge. xxix. 9, 10. Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water, &c. Ex. ii. 16. They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord. Ju. v. 11.

14 Let it come to pass, &c.] See chap. xv. 8. and com.

That thou hast appointed, &c.] When the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of

thy pitcher to drink (said Abraham's servant), and she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the Lord hath appointed out for my master's son. Ge. xxiv. 44. House and riches are the inheritance of fathers; and a prudent wife is from the Lord. Pr. xix. 14.

And thereby shall I know, &c.] See chap. xv. 8. and com. And Moses answered, and said, But behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice; for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee: and the Lord said unto him, If they will not believe, neither hearken unto thy voice, thou shalt take of the water of the river and pour it upon the dry land; and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land. Ex. iv. 1. 9. And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream, and lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along; and it was so when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof (as applied to his sword), that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise, for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian. Ju. vii. 13. 15. And they (five men of the Danites) said unto "him" (the

Levite, Jonathan," hired by Micah), Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous. Ju. xviii. 5. Now therefore make a new cart (said the priests and diviners to the Philistines), and take two milch kine on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them; and take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart, and see if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil; but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote "us" (the "Philistines"); it was a chance that happened unto us. 1 Sa. vi. 7.9. When thou art departed from me (said Samuel to Saul) to-day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found, and lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son? &c. And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all
