15 Before he had done speaking.] And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder. Ge. xxiv. 45. And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. And God did so that night; for it was dry upon the fleece only (as Gideon desired as a sign), and there was dew on all the ground. Ju. vi. 36. 40. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry. Ps. xxxiv. 15. O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. Ps. lxv. 2. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him; he also will hear

their cry, and will save them. Ps. cxlv. 18, 19. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. Is. lviii. 9. And while, I was speaking and praying, and confessing my sin, and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God, for the holy mountain of my God, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision, talked with me, and said, At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I (Gabriel, who touched Daniel while he was speaking) am come to show thee. Rebekah came out.] And she said unto "him" ("the servant of Abraham") I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. Ge. xxiv. 24. And it was told Abraham, saying, Behold Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor; (among these) Bethuel. And Bethuel begat Rebekah, &c. Ge. xxii. 20. 22, 23. Milcah.] See chap. xi. ver. 27, 28, 29. and Ge. xxii. 23.

Pitcher upon her shoulder.] And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar (putting it on her shoulder). Ge. xxi. 14. And while he (Jacob) yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she kept them. Ge. xxix. 9. Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. Ex. ii. 16. And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn; so she gleaned in the field until even. Ru. ii. 2. 17. (4 virtuous woman) she looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Pr. xxxi. 27.

16 Fair, &c.] She (Rebekah) is my sister, for he feared to say, she is my wife, lest, said he (Isaac) the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah, because she was fair to look upon. Ge. xxvi. 7. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured. Ge. xxxix. 6.

Known her.] And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bare Cain. Ge. iv. 1. Now therefore (said Moses) kill every male among the little ones (of the Midianites), and kill every woman that hath known man ; but all the women children that have not known a man keep alive for yourselves. Nu. xxxi. 17, 18. I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved (Christ) that knocketh (saith his church), saying, Open to me,

pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ear-ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of

my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled. Can. v. 2.

17 Let me, I pray thee, &c.] So he (Elijah) arose, and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks; and he called to her and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. 1 Ki. xvii. 10. Now Jacob's well was there: there cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water; Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. John iv. 7. 9.

Water of thy pitcher.] See chap. xxvi. throughout. The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty. Is. xxi. 14. And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of water in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. Is. xxx. 25. In the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert, and the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water. Is. xxxv. 6, 7. When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them: I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. Is. xli. 17, 18. They" ("the Gentiles") shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat or sun smite them; for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. xlix. 10.

Is.

18 Drink, my lord.] She (a virtuous woman) openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Pr. xxxi. 26. Love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous. 1 Pe. iii. 8. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves; use hospitality one with another without grudging. 1 Pe. iv. 8, 9.

19 She said, I will draw water, &c.] See ver. 14. 45, 46, and 1 Pe. iv. 9. preced. com.

21 Wondering at her.] Then went king David in, and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto ? And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord God, knowest thy servant. 2 Sa. vii. 18. 20. I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. This poor man cried, and the Lord delivered him, and saved him out of all his troubles. Ps. xxxiv. 1. 6. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good. O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the loving-kindness of the Lord. Ps. cvii. 1. 8. 15. 43. I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. Ps. cxvi. 1.7. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And he" ("Jesus") went down with "them" (“ Mary and Joseph"), and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them. But his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. Lu. ii. 19. 51.

The Lord had made his journey, &c.] See ver. 12. And "he" ("the servant of Abraham") said unto "them" (“Rebekah's mother and brother"), Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way. Ge. xxiv. 56.

22 Took a golden ear-ring, &c.] And it came to pass when "he" (“Laban" Rebekah's brother) saw the ear-ring and the bracelets upon his sister's hands, &c. he came unto the man (Abraham's servant), &c. Ge. xxiv, 30. And Aaron said unto them (the Israelites), Break off the golden ear-rings which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to me. And all the people brake off the golden ear-rings which were in their ears, and brought them anto Aaron. Ex. xxxii. 2, 3. Now it came to pass on the third day that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king's house (Ahasuerus'). Es. v. 1. Can a

ten shekels weight of gold; And said, Whose daughter art thou? 23 tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in? And she said unto him, 1 am the daughter of Bethuel 24 the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. She said moreover 25 unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped 26

maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me times without number. Je. ii. 32. I will therefore (saith Paul) in like manner also that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array, but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 1 Ti. ii. 9, 10. "Whose ("wives'") adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit: for after this manner, in old time, the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands. Finally, be ye all of one mind. 1 Pe. iii. 3, 4, 5. 8.

Ear-ring.] See preced. com. In that day (of the calamities of Judah) the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon; the chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers; the bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the ear-rings; the rings, and nose jewels; the changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins; the glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails. Is. iii. 18-23. I (the Lord) decked "thee" ("Jerusalem") also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck; and I put a jewel on thy forehead, and ear-rings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head. Ex. xvi. 11, 12.

Of half a shekel.] My lord (said Ephron to Abraham), hearken unto me. The land (for a burying-place) is worth four hundred shekels of silver. And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron, and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth. Ge. xxiii. 15, 16.

24 I am the daughter of Bethuel, &c.] See ver. 15. and chap. xi. 29. with com. and chap. xxii. 20. 23.

25 We have both straw, &c.] Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your (the angels' feet who were entertained by Abraham) feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. Ge. xviii. 4. 8. And when he (the old man of Gibeah) had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city; and

the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah, and there is no man that receiveth me to house; yet there is both straw and provender for our

asses.

So he (the old man) brought him (the Levite seeking his concubine) into his house, Ju. xix. and gave provender unto the asses. 17, 18, 19. 21. The liberal deviseth liberal things, and by liberal things shall he stand. Is. xxxii. 8. Use hospitality one towards another without grudging. 1 Pe. iv. 9. 26 Bowed down.] And I (the servant of Abraham) bowed down my head, and worAnd it came to pass when shipped the Lord. Abraham's servant heard "their" ("Laban and Bethuel's") words, he worshipped the Ge. xxiv. Lord, bowing himself to the earth. 48. 52. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the "lad" ("Isaac") will go yonder and worship. Ge. xxii. 4. And when "they" ("the Israelites") had heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped. Ex. iv. 31. It is the sacrifice of the Lord's passover (ye shall say to your children), who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians: (when Moses had thus said) the people bowed the head, and worshipped. Ex. xii. 27. And Moses made haste (as the Lord passed by before him) and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped. Ex. xxxiv. 8.

And David (the people having made Solomon king the second time) said to all the congregation, Now bless the Lord your God. And all the congregation blessed the Lord God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the Lord and the king. 1 Ch. xxix. 20. And Jehoshaphat (urging the people to go out against the Ammonites) bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the Lord, worshipping the Lord. 2 Ch. xx. 18. Moreover, Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the Lord, with the words of David and of Asaph the seer (for the cleansing of the house of God); and they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped. 2 Ch. xxix. 30. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God (having read the law before the congregation of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding). And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with

And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the house of my 28 master's brethren. And the damsel ran, and told them of her 29 mother's house these things. And Rebekah had a brother, and

lifting up their hands; and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Ne. viii. 6. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him. Ps. xxii. 29. All the earth shall worship thee; they shall sing to thy name (0 God). Ps. lxvi. 4. They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him. Ps. lxxii. 9. O come, let us worship, and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. Ps. xcv. 6. Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? Mi. vi. 6. At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. Phil. ii. 10.

27 Blessed be the Lord God, &c.] See verse 12, and chap. ix. 26. and chap. xiv. 20. with com. And Jethro (the priest of Midian) said, Blessed be the Lord who hath delivered "you" (“the Israelites") out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh. Ex. xviii. 10. And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. Ru. iv. 14. And David said to "Abigail," ("the wife of Nabal of Maon"), Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me. And when David heard that Nabal was dead (for his heart died away within him upon hearing from his wife that David spared him), he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil. 1 Sa. xxv. 32. 39. And Ahimaaz (who with Chushi brought tidings of Absalom's death to David) said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king. 2 Sa. xviii. 28. Wherefore (in consequence of the princes and people offering willingly to the house of God), David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever: now, therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. 1 Ch. xxix. 10. 13. Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Ps. Ixviii. 19. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things, and blessed be his glorious name for ever, and let the whole earth be filled with his glory, Amen, Amen. Ps. lxxii. 18, 19. Of his mercy and his truth.] Now, there fore, let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against "them" (the "worshippers" of the golden calf in the wilderness), and that I may consume them; and I will make of thee (Moses) a great nation. Ex. xxxii. 10. He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Ps. xcviii. 3. For the Lord is good: his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth to all generations. Ps. c. 5. Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old. Mi. vii. 20. The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Jn. i. 17. See chap. xxxii. 10.

The Lord led me, &c.] See verse 18. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Pr. iii. 6. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her, for she is thy life. Pr. iv. 11. 13. I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment. Pr. viii. 20. My master's brethren.] See verse 4. and chap. xiii. 8. with com. And it came to pass in those days, that Moses went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens; and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. Ez. ii. 11.

28 Them of her mother's house.] And "I" ("the servant of Abraham") blessed the Lord God of my master, which had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter unto his son. And her (Rebekah's) brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten. And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. Ge. xxiv. 48. 55. 67. And Laban (seeking for his gods which Rachel had stolen) went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maid-servants' tents; but he found them not: then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent. xxxi. 33.

his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. And it came to pass, when he saw the ear-ring and brace- 30 lets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the Lord; wherefore 31 standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. And the man came into the house: and he un- 32 girded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him. And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not 33 eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. And 34 he said, I am Abraham's servant. And the Lord hath blessed my 35 master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him

31 Thou blessed of the Lord, &c.] Let us make a covenant with thee (said Abimelech, &c.), that thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee (Isaac), and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace. Thou art now the blessed of the Lord. Ge. xxvi. 29. And he (Micah), said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the Lord, my son. Ju. xvii. 2. And he (Boaz) said (to Ruth, whom he found lying at his feet), Blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter, for thou hast shewed more kind ness in the latter end than at the beginning. Ru. iii. 10. For I have prepared the house.] We have both straw and provender enough (said Rebekah), and room to lodge in. Ge. xxiv. 25.

32 Wash his feet.] See chap. xviii. 4. and com. xix. 2. and com. "He" ("Jesus") riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet. If I then (said Jesus), your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

33 I will not eat, &c.] Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips. I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. Job xxiii. 12. Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed, until I find out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. Ps. cxxxii. 3. 5. Seest

thou a man diligent in his business; he shall stand before kings. Pr. xxii. 29. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might. Ec. ix. 10. Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. In the meanwhile his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat: Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Jn. iv. 14. 31. 34. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ: knowing that whatsoever good things any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. Ep. vi. 5. 8. They that have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit: these things teach and exhort. 1 Tim. vi. 2.

34 Abraham's servant, &c.] See verse 2. and com.

35 The Lord hath blessed my master, &c.] See verse 1. and chap. xii. 2; xiii. 2. and com. And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac. xxv. 11. Then Isaac sowed in that land (of Abimelech), and received in the same year an hundred fold, and the Lord blessed him. Ge. xxvi. 12. His (Joseph's) hands were made strong, even by the God of thy father (said Jacob), who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. Ge. xlix. 25. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation; and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. Ps. xviii. 35. and riches shall be in his house (who feareth the Lord), and his righteousness endureth for ever. Ps. cxii. 3. The blessing of the Lord
