wine: Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be 29 lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to

waiteth for the sons of men. Mi. v. 7. By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. He. xi. 20.

Fatness of the earth.] And Isaac his father answered, and said unto him (Esau), Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above. Ge. xxvii. 39. And take your father (Jacob), and your households (said Pharaoh to Joseph), and come unto me, and I will give you the good the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land. Ge. xlv. 18. Out of Asher his (Gad's) bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties. Ge. xlix. 20. And (spy out, said Moses) what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad: whether it be fat or lean. Nu. xiii. 19, 20. They (the children of men), shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house, and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. Ps. xxxvi. 8. And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou being a wild olive tree were graffed in amongst them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive-tree, boast not against the branches. Ro. xi. 17, 18.

Plenty of corn, &c.] And he (the Lord) will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee (Israel): he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil; the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee. De. vii. 13. For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land: a land of brooks of water, of fountains, and depths that spring out of valleys and hills: a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it: a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. De. viii. 7. 9. The fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew. De. xxxiii. 28. Unto "whom" ("the children of Israel") the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey. Jos. v. 6. And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat, for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil. 1 Ki. v. 11. And behold, I will give to thy servants (said Solomon), the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil. 2 Ch. ii. 10. Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it; thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it. The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are VOL. I.

covered over with corn: they shout for joy, they also sing. Ps. lxv. 9. 13. (He, the Lord, causeth the earth to bring forth) wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. Ps. civ. 15. Yea, the Lord will answer, and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith; and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen. Joel ii. 19. For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! Corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids. Zec. ix. 17.

29 Let people serve thee.] See chap. ix. 25, 26. and com. xxii. 17, 18. and com. Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise; thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Ge. xlix. 8. 10. See 2 Sa. viii. and x. throughout. Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt. 1 Ki. iv. 21. Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron: thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Ps. ii. 6. 8, 9. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth. Ps. lxxii. 8. Of the increase of his (Messiah's) government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even for ever. Is. ix. 7. In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces, and consume all these kingdoms; and it shall stand for ever. as much as "thou" ("Nebuchadnezzar") sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the great God hath made known to the king (by his dream) what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. Da. ii. 44, 45. And he (the faithful and true that sat upon a white horse) hath on his vesture, and on his thigh, a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. Re. xix. 16.

thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that 30 blesseth thee. And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in 31 from his hunting. And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me. 32 And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, 33 I am thy son, thy first-born Esau. And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and 34 have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed. host, had smitten every male in Edom. For
six months did Joab remain "there" ("in
Edom"), until he had cut off every male in

(in the days of Jehoshaphat) no king in Edom.
A deputy was king. 1 Ki. xxii. 47. For
Judah prevailed above his brethren; and of
him came the chief ruler: but the birthright
was Joseph's. 1 Ch. v. 2. And Amaziah (the
king) smote of the children of Seir ten thou-

gods. 2 Ch. xxv. 11. 14. Michtam of David,

lxiii. 1. 6. I have loved you, saith the Lord;
yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us?
Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the
Lord; yet I loved Jacob. And your eyes
shall sec, and ye shall say, The Lord will be
magnified from the border of Israel. Mal. i.
2. 5. It was said unto "her" (" Rebekah"),
The elder shall serve the younger. Ro. ix. 12.
Cursed be every one, &c. I will bless them
that bless thee, and curse him that curseth
thee. Ge. xii. 3. Behold (said Balak, king
of Moab), there is "a people" come out of
Egypt ("the Israelites"), which covereth the
face of the earth; Come now, curse me them.
And God said unto Balaam (when Balaam

them (the Moabites); thou shalt not curse the
people, for they are blessed. Nu. xxii. 11, 12
How shall I (Balaam) curse whom God hath
not cursed? or how shall I defy whom the
Lord hath not defied? Nu. xxiii. 8. He
(Israel) couched, he lay down as a lion, and
as a great lion; who shall stir him up!
Blessed is he (said Balaam) that blesseth thee,
and cursed is he that curseth thee. Nu. xxiv.
9. For thus saith the Lord of hosts, After
the glory hath he sent "me" ("the angel,"
sent to measure Jerusalem) unto the nations
which spoiled you; for he that toucheth you,

Yea, and he shall be blessed.] And God Almighty bless thee (Jacob), and give thee the blessing of Abraham. Ge. xxviii. 3, 4. The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have i more abundantly. I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand. My Father which gave them me is greater than all; and none is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. John x. 10. 28, 29. Moreover, the law entered, that the offence might abound: but where sin abounded grace did much more abound. That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness, unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Ro. v. 20, 21. The gifts and calling

heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father. And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath 35 taken away thy blessing. And he said, Is not he rightly named 36 Jacob for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me? And 37 Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son? And Esau said unto his father, Hast 38 thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept. And Isaac his 39

of God are without repentance. Ro. xi. 29. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. Ep. i. 3. By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. He. xi. 20.

34 He cried, &c.] Then (when the Amalekites spoiled Ziklag) David, and the people that were with him, lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 1 Sa. xxx. 4. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. Pr. i. 24. 28. 31. The foolishness of man perverteth his way, and his heart fretteth against the Lord. Pr. xix. 3. Strive to enter in at the strait gate; for many I say unto you will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. "There" ("where the wicked are rejected") shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth; when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. Lu. xiii. 24. 28. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, "he" (** Esau") was rejected; for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. He. xii. 17.

35 Thy brother came, &c.] See verse xix. 23. Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests, let none be wanting, for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal. 2 Ki. x. 19. Will ye speak wickedly for God, and talk deceitfully for him? Job xiii. 7. Have we not all one Father? Hath not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? Mal. ii. 10. For if

the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie, unto his glory, why yet am I also judged as a sinner? and not rather (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), Let us do evil, that good may come ? whose damnation is just. Ro. iii. 7, 8. But we have "this treasure" ("the light of the knowledge of the glory of God") in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 2 Co. iv. 7. This is the will of God, that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter, because that the Lord is the avenger of all such. 1 Th. iv. 6.

And

36 He took away my birthright.] after that came his "brother" "Jacob" out (in Sarah's travail), and his hand took hold on Esau's heel, and his name was called Jacob. And Jacob said (to Esau), Sell me this day thy birthright; and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread, and pottage of lentiles. Thus Esau despised his birthright. Ge. xxv. 26. 31. 33. 34.

37 See verse 29. and Ge. xxv. 23.

38 Hast thou but one blessing.] See verse 34. 36. All these are the twelve tribes of Israel; and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them, every one according to his blessing he blessed them. Ge. xlix. 28. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; I also will laugh at your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh. Pr. i. 24. 26. Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come. They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine. Is. xxxii. 10. 12. Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart; but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. Is. lxv. 14. When he (Esau) would have inherited the blessing he was rejected, for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. He. xii. 17.

father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above; 40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and

it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that 41 thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck. And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father

39 Behold, thy dwelling.] And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan, and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob. Ge. xxxvi. 6. And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau; and I gave unto Esau Mount Seir, to possess it. Josh. xxiv. 4. By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. He. xi. 20.

And the messen

40 By thy sword, &c.] gers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. Ge. xxxii. 6. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. Mut. x. 34.

Serve thy brother.] See chap. xxv. 23. When David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom; Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants with him, to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child. 1 Ki. xi. 15. 17. He (king Amaziah) slew of Edom, in the valley of salt, ten thousand, and took Selah by war. Thou hast indeed smitten Edom (said Jehoash, king of Israel, to Amaziah, king of Judah), and thine heart hath lifted thee up. 2 Ki. xiv. 7. 10. Them also (the vessels of gold and silver) king David dedicated unto the Lord, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations, from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek. 1 Ch. xviii. 11. But upon Mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness, and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. And saviours shall come up on Mount Zion to judge the Mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord's. Obad. 17. 21.

Thou shalt break his yoke, &c.] In "his" ("Jehoram's") days, Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. 2 Ki. viii. 20. 22. In "his" ("Jehoram's") days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king. 2 Ch. xxi. 8. 10. Again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah, and carried away captives. 2 Ch. xxviii. 17.

41 Hated Jacob.] Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground;

and Cain talked with Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. Ge. iv. 2. 8. And when his (Joseph's) brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. Ge. xxxvii. 4. 8. Thus saith the Lord God, Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah, by taking venge ance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them: thus saith the Lord God, Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred, I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebuke. Ez. xxv. 12. lá.

17. Because "thou" ("Seir") hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel, by the force of the sword, in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end; therefore, saith the Lord God, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee. Sith thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee. Ez. xxxv. 5, 6. Thus saith the Lord, For three transgressions of Edom, and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever. But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah. Am. i. 11, 12. For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever; neither shouldest thou have stood in the cross way, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress. Obad. 10. 14. We should love one another; not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him! Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer, and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. A John iii. 12. 15.

The days of mourning.] And Isaac gave up the ghost and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days. And

his sons Jacob and Esau buried him. Ge. Xxxv. 29. And forty days were fulfilled for "him" ("Jacob"), (for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed), and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days; and when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, &c. And "they ("who accompanied Joseph and his brethren "), came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan; and there they mourned, with a great and very sore lamentation, and he made a mourning for his father seven days. And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaannites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians. Ge. 1. 3, 4,. 10. 11. And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. De. xxxiv. 8. His servants, therefore, took "him" (“king Josiah") out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had (being wounded by the archers in the valley of Megiddo, fighting against Necho, king of Egypt); and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers: and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. 2 Ch. xxxv. 24. I behaved myself as though he (my enemy) had been my friend or brother. I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother. Ps. xxxv. 14.

Then will I slay my brother.] He (Esau) cometh to meet thee (Jacob), and four hundred men with him. Ge. xxxii. 6. Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him; fear not. And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded (for the injury of Tamar the sister of Absalom). 2 Sa. xiii. 28, 29. The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him, for he seeth that his day is coming; a little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. Ps. xxxvii. 12. 13. 16. Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings. The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the way-side; they have set gins for me. Ps. cxl. 4, 5. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein they walked have they privily laid a snare for me. Ps.

cxlii. 3. Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those who go down into the pit: we shall find all precious substance; we shall fill our houses with spoil for their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Pr. i. 12, 13. 16. Frowardness is in his heart; he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. Pr. vi. 14. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Ec. vii. 9. For thy violence against thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover "thee" ("Esau"), and thou shalt be cut off for ever. Obad. 10. Be ye angry, and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath: neither give place to the devil. Ep. iv. 26, 27. Unto the pure all things are pure; but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled: they profess that they know God, but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Tit. i. 15, 16. For we ourselves, also, were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Tit. iii. 3. should love one another; not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer, and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 1 John iii. 12, 15.

We

42 Comfort himself.] And when "they" ("the sons of Jacob") saw "him" (“ Joseph”) afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him, to slay him. Come now, therefore, let us slay him (said they one to another), and cast him into some pit; and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams. Ge. xxxvii. 18. 20. And "they" (" Joseph's brethren") said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child, and ye would not hear? Therefore, behold, also his blood is required. Ge. xlii. 21, 22. And David said (to the Egyptian servant of an Amalekite), Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this
