my Lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant, for thou art even as Pharaoh. Ge. xliv. 18. And when "they" ("the Shechemites") told it to Jotham (that they made Abimelech king), he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you. Ju. ix. 7.

7 Your sheaves stood round, &c.] And Joseph was governor over the land, and he it was that sold (corn) to all the people of the land; and Joseph's brethren came and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them. Ge. xlii. 6. 9. And when Joseph was come home, "they" ("his brethren") brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth. Ge. xliii. 26. And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house (for he was yet there), and they fell before him on the ground. My lord (said Judah to Jacob, speaking of Joseph) asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or a brother? Ge. xliv.

8 Shalt thou indeed reign over us?] See verse 4. And "he" ("the Hebrew") said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. Er. ii. 14. The children of Belial said (of Saul), How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. 1 Sa. x. 27. Eliab's anger was kindled against David (his brother), and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thine heart, for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle (in which Goliath defied the armies of Israel). 1 Sa. xvii. 28. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and VOL. I.

vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. Ps. ii. 2-6. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. Ps. cxviii. 22. But his citizens hated him (the nobleman in the parable, who went into a far country to receive a kingdom), and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. Lu. xix. 14. And he (Jesus) beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner. Lu. xx. 17. Of a truth, against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou (O God) hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. Ac. iv. 27, 28. This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. Ac. vii. 35. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? He. x. 28, 29.

9 Another dream.] See verse 7. And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do: and for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. Ge. xli. 25. 32.

The sun and the moon.] And his father rebuked "him" ("Joseph"), and said unto him, Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? Ge. xxxvii. 10. And they (Joseph's brethren) answered him, Thy ser vant our father is in good health, he is yet alive; and they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. Ge. xliii. 28. And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he was yet there and they fell before him on the ground. My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother? Ge, xliv. 14. 19. Haste ye, and go up to my

father (said Joseph to his brethren), and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt; come down unto me, tarry not. Ge. xlv. 9. And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. Ge. xlvi. 29. And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's houshold, with bread, according to their families. Ge. xlvii. 12. And they (Joseph's brethren) sent a messenger to Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, So shall ye say unto Joseph: Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin, for they did unto thee evil; and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. Now therefore, fear ye not (said Joseph), I will nourish you, and your little ones; and he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. Ge. 1. 15. 21. The patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt; but God was with him, and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt, and all his house. Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction, and our fathers found no sustenance. But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first; and at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh. Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, three score and fifteen souls. Ac. vii. 9-14.

Stars made obeisance.] And "it" ("the little horn," in Daniel's vision of the ram and he-goat) waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. Da. viii. 10. Do all things without murmurings and disputings, that ye may be blameless and harmless, without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. Phi. ii. 14, 15.

10 Shall I and thy mother, &c.] Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee (said Isaac to Jacob); be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee. Ge. xxvii. 29. The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee;

and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. Is. Ix. 14. At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phi. ii. 10, 11.

11 Envied him.] He (Isaac) had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants; and the Philistines envied him. And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us, for thou art much mightier than we. Ge. xxvi. 14. 16. They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the Lord. Ps. cvi. 16. I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. Ec. iv. 4. The envy also of Ephraim shall depart (in the peaceable kingdom of the Branch), and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim. Is. xi. 13. Lord, when thy hand is lifted up they will not see; but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them. Is. xxvi. 11. For he (Pilate) knew that for envy they (the Jews) had delivered him (Jesus). Mat. xxvii. 18. For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. Mar. xv. 10. The patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt. Ac. vii. 9. But when the Jews saw the multitudes they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. xiii. 45. (Among the works of the flesh are) envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Ga. v. 21. We ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, &c. &c. living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Ti. iii. 3. If ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth; for where envying and strife is, there is confusion, and every evil work. Ja. iii. 14. 16. Do ye think, then, that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy Ja. iv. 5.

12 In Shechem.] See verse 1. And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram, and pitched his tent before the city. Ge. xxxiii. 18. And it came to pass on the third day, when they (the Shechemites, after circumcision) were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city and slew all the males: they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and spoiled the city; they took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field; and all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house. And they (Simeon and Judah) said (when Jacob rebuked them), Should he (Shechem) deal with our sister (Dinah) as with an harlot? Ge. xxxiv. 25 -31.

13 Come, and I will send thee.] And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren; and carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare. And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took and went as Jesse had commanded. 1 Sa. xvii. 17, 18. 20. Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Mat. x. 16. Then said the lord of the vineyard (in the parable), What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him when they see him. Lu. xx. 13. Here am I.] God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. Ge. xxii. 1. When Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, he called Esan his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I. And he (Jacob) came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I.

Ge. xxvii. 1. 18. Ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord (it came to pass) that the Lord called Samuel; and he answered, Here am I. And he ran unto Eli (the priest), and said, Here am I, for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again: and he went and lay down. And the Lord called yet again, Samuel: and Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me: and he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. And the Lord called Samuel again the third time; and he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child. Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son : and he answered, Here am I. 1 Sa. iii. 4, 5, 6. 8. 16. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest live long on the earth. Ep. vi. 1, 2, 3.

14 See whether it be well.] And he (Jacob) said (unto them that were watering the sheep), Is he (Laban) well? And they said, He is well. Ge. xxix. 6. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me (to interpret thy dream): God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. Ge. xli. 16. And Jesse said unto David his son, Run to the camp to thy brethren; and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge. 1 Sa. xvii. 17, 18. And the king (David) said unto Cushi, Is the young man, Absalom, safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. 2 Sa. xviii. 32. Their blood (said Solomon: the blood of Abner and Amasa, whom he had slain) shall therefore return upon the head of Joab (whom Benaiah afterwards slew, at the king's command), and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the Lord. 1 Kï. ii. 33. As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity, but peace shall be upon Israel. Ps. cxxv. 5. Seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives (said Jeremiah, by letter to the captives), and pray unto the Lord for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. Je. xxix. 7. If thou (Jerusalem) hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace; but now they are hid from thine eyes. Lu. xix. 42.

me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and 15 he came to Shechem. And a certain man found him, and, behold,

he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, 16 What seekest thou? And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, 17 I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in 18 Dothan. And when they saw him afar off, even before he came 19 near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. And

Hebron.] See chap. xxiii. 2; xxxv. 27. And "they" ("the men who were sent by Moses to search the land of Canaan") ascended by the south, and came into Hebron; (now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt). Nu. xiii. 22. Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, the Kenezite, unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel. And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba, which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. Jos. xiv. 14, 15.

15 He was wandering, &c.] She (Hagar) departed (being sent away with her son Ishmael, by Abraham), and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. Ge. xxi. 14.

What seekest thou?] And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest; and when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples. Ju. iv. 22. And Elisha said unto "them" ("who were sent by the king of Assyria to apprehend him, and whom the Lord, on Elisha's prayer, had smote with blindness"), This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek: but he led them to Samaria. 2 Ki. vi. 19. Jesus turned and saw "them" (" two of his disciples") following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? John i. 38. Upon this (Christ's declaration to the woman of Samaria, that he was the Messias) came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or Why talkest thou with her? John iv. 27. Jesus, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto "them" ("the band of men" that came with Judas), Whom seek ye? Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. John xviii. 4. 7. Jesus saith unto "her" ("Mary," who stood without at the sepulchre, weeping), Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him.

16 I seek my brethren.] The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Lu. xix. 10.

Tell me, I pray thee, &c.] Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth (saith the Church to Christ), where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon. Ca. i. 7.

17 Dothan.] And he (the king of Syria) said (to his servant), Go and spy where he (Elisha) is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. 2 Ki. vi. 13.

18 Conspired against him.] And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David. 1 Sa. xix. 1. For I have heard the slander of many; fear was on every side. While they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life. Ps. xxxi. 13. The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. Ps. xxxvii. 12. 32. They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood. Ps. xciv. 21. He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants. Ps. cv. 25. For my love they are my adversaries. Ps. cix. 4. But when the husbandmen (in the parable) saw the son (whom his father, the householder who had planted the vineyard, had sent unto them to receive the fruits thereof, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. Mat. xxi. 38. All the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, to put him to death. Mat. xxvii. 1.

Those husbandmen (in the parable) said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be our's Mar. xii. 7. The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft. and put him to death. Mar. xiv. 1. When the husbandmen (in the parable) saw "him" (“the householder's son,' whom he had sent to receive of the fruits of the vineyard), they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be our's. So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Lu. xx. 14. 15. From that day forth (after Caiaphas prophesied) they took counsel together for to put him to death. John xi. 53. Certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would

neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. Ac. xxiii. 12.

20 Let us slay him.] They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they commune of laying snares privily: they say, Who shall see them? Ps. lxiv. 5. They say, Come with us let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause. Pr. i. 11. Let us swallow them up alive, as the grave, for their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Pr. i. 12. 16. The Lord doth hate a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood. Pr. vi. 17. Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous, but who is able to stand before envy? Pr. xxvii. 4. We ourselves were sometimes foolish, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. Tit. iii. 3. This is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. 1 John iii. 11, 12.

Some evil beast.] And when he (the man of God who was seduced by the old prophet of Beth-el) was gone (after he had eaten bread and drank water), a lion met him by the way, and slew him, and his carcase was cast in the way. 1 Ki. xiii. 24. And he (Elisha) turned back, and looked on them, and cursed "them" (who mocked him, and called him "thou bald head" &c.) in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she-bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 2 Ki. ii. 24. He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool. Pr. x. 18. He that covereth his sin shall not prosper. Pr. xxviii. 13.

And we shall see, &c.] And now (said Saul, when his life was spared by David in the cave of En-gedi) I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand. 1 Sa. xxiv. 20. Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 1 Sa. xxvi. 2. Where is he (said the wise men) that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king heard these things he was troubled: then when he had privily called the wise men, he sent them to Bethlehem (which

the priests and scribes had declared the place where Christ should be born), and said, Go, and search diligently for the child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I may come and worship him also: when they had heard the king they departed, and when (directed by the star) they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother; and being warned of God in a dream, they departed into their own country another way. Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under. Mat. ii. 2-16. Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself (said those who passed by, reviling Christ): if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes, and elders, said, He saved others, himself he cannot save; if he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. Mat. xxvii. 40, 41, 42. And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself, and come down from the cross: he saved others (said the chief priest); himself he cannot save. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him. Mar. xv. 30, 31, 32. What shall we (the rulers of the Jews) do to "these men?" ("Peter and John,") for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it; but that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name: and they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. Ac. iv. 16, 17, 18.

21 Reuben heard it.] Spake I not unto you (said Reuben to Joseph's brethren), saying, Do not sin against the child, and ye would not hear? therefore, behold also his blood is required. Ge. xlii. 22.

22 Shed no blood.] See preced. com. Ge. xlii. 22.
