brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

And 24

it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. And our father said, Go again, 25 and buy us a little food. And we said, We cannot go down: 26 if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us. And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my 27 wife bare me two sons: And the one went out from me, and I said, 28 Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since: And if ye 29 take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. Now therefore when I 30 come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life; It shall come to pass, 31 when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and

24 We told him, &c.] And they came unto Jacob their father, unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them. Ge. xlii. 29. See com. on verse 19.

We cannot go down.] I cannot rise and give thee (said the person from within to his friend). Lu. xi. 7.

27 My wife bare me two sons.] And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee than that I should give her to another man. And Jacob served seven years for Rachel. And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife. It came to pass in the evening that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him. He gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also. Ge. xxix. 18, 19, 20, 21. 23. 28. God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb, and she conceived and bare a son, and said, God hath taken away my reproach, and she called his name Joseph, and said, The Lord shall add to me another son. And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place and to my country. xxx. 22-25. And they journeyed from Bethel, and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath, and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour: and it came to pass when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not, thou shalt have this son also: and as her soul was in departing (for she died) she called his name Ben-oni, but his father called him Benjamin. Ge. xxxv. 16, 17, 18. The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife, Joseph and Benjamin. xlvi. 19.

28 One went out, &c.] And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send thee unto them, and he said unto him, Here am I: and he said to him, Go, I pray thee,

see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks, and bring me word again. Ge. xxxvii. 13, 14.

Surely he is torn.] It is my son's coat (said Jacob), an evil beast hath devoured him, Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. xxxvii. 33. Me have ye bereaved of my chil dren, Joseph is not, and Simeon is not. My son (Benjamin) shall not go down with you: for his brother is dead, and he is left alone. Ge. xlii. 36. 38.

29 If ye take this also.] See Ge. xlii. 36. 38. preced, com. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. Ge. xliii. 14. My soul is full of troubles, and my life draweth nigh unto the grave: I am counted with them that go down into the pit, I am as a man that hath no strength. Ps. lxxxviii. 3, 4.

Sorrow.] See verse 31. and com. verse 28 under "Surely he is torn." Then (when Israel breaks my covenant) my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them. So that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us? De. xxxi. 17. See Ps. lxxxviii. 4. preced.

30 When I come to thy servant.] See verses 17. 31. 34.

His life is bound up, &c.] And it came to pass, when he (David) had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 1 Sa. xviii. 1. And the king (David) was much moved (having heard of his son's death), and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept, and as he wept, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son. 2 Sa. xviii. 33.

31 When he seeth that the lad, &c.] And the messengers answered and said (unto Eli the priest), Israel is fled before the Philistines,

thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our 32 father with sorrow to the grave. For thy servant became surety

for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, 33 then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my 34 lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren. For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas are dead, and the ark of God is taken. And it came to pass when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backwards, by the side of the gate, and his neck brake and he died, for he was an old man, and heavy. 1 Sa. iv. 17, 18. The sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Co. vii. 10. But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not even as others which have no hope. 1 The. iv. 13.

Shall bring down, &c.] See verse 29. And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood: come, and and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, and our flesh. And his brethren were content: and he (Jacob believing that he had been devoured by an evil beast) mourned for his son: he refused to be comforted, and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Ge. xxxvii. 26, 27. 34, 35. And David said unto Abiathar (who had escaped from the murder of the priests by Saul), I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's (Abimelech's) house. 1 Sa. xxii. 22.

32 Surety for the lad.] See Ge. xliii. 8,

9. 16.

33 Therefore, I pray thee, &c.] Yet now if thou wilt forgive their sin (in making the golden calf); and if not, blot me, pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written (said Moses to the Lord). Ex. xxxii. 32. Scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath, through him; for if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Ro. v. 7-10. I could wish (said Paul) that myself were accursed from Christ, for my

brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh. Ro. ix. 3.

Instead of the lad, &c.] By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testimony. He. vii. 22. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1 John iii. 16.

34 Lest peradventure, &c.] And the man of thine (said the Lord to Eli, through a man of God) whom I shall not cut off, from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart, and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age: and this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas, in one day they shall die both of them. 1 Sa. ii. 33, 34. Behold, I will gather "thee" ("Josiah") to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. 2 Ch. xxxiv. 28. For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? Or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred? Es. viii. 6. The king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah. Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death. Je. lii. 10, 11.

Come on my father.] Moses told his fatherin-law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake; and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them. Ex. xviii. 8. If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him, Oh that one would hear me, behold, my desire is that the Almighty would answer me. Job xxxi. 29. 35. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the Lord. Ps. cxvi. 3, 4. Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me, yet thy commandments are my delight. Ps. cxix. 143.

CHAPTER XLV.

THEN Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood 1 by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren. And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and 2 the house of Pharaoh heard. And Joseph said unto his brethren, 3 I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence. And 4

CHAP. XLV.-1 Could not refrain.] And Joseph made haste for his bowels did yearn upon his brother, and he sought where to weep, and he entered into his chamber and wept there. And he washed his face, and went out and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. Ge. xliii. 30, 31. I have long time holden my peace, I have been still, and refrained myself. Now will I (the Lord) cry like a travailing woman, I will destroy and devour at once (for their idolatry). Is. xlii. 14. Then I said (because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me Jeremiah), I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name, but his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay. Je. xx. 9.

Cause every man to go out, &c.] Tell it not in Gath (said David lamenting over Saul and Jonathan), publish it not in the streets of Askelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 2 Sa. i. 20. If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go, and tell him his fault between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. Mat. xviii. 15. Him (Christ) God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly, not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. Ac. x. 40, 41. Charity doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil. 1 Co. xiii. 5.

2 Wept aloud.] And all the congregation (when they heard the news of those who were sent to search the land of Canaan) lifted up their voice, and cried, and the people wept that night. Nu. xiv. 1. So they (Naomi and Ruth) went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them; and they said, Is this Naomi? Ru. i. 19. I beseech thee, O Lord, remember now (said Hezekiah, when warned to prepare for death) how I have walked before thee in truth, and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. 2 Ki.

xx. 3. And they all (the elders of Ephesus) wept sore, and fell on Paul's neck (who had said they should see his face no more), and kissed him. Ac. xx. 37.

3 I am Joseph.] But straightway Jesus (walking on the sea) spake unto them (his disciples who were in a ship), saying, Be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid. Mat. xiv. 27. At the second time (of Jacob sending his sons into Egypt) Joseph was made known to his brethren: and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh. Ac. vii. 13. And he (Saul) said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom thou persecutest. Ac. ix. 5.

For they were troubled at his presence.] But now it is come upon thee (said Eliphaz to Job, reproving him), and thou faintest: it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled. Job iv. 5. Therefore am I troubled at his presence; when I consider, I am afraid of him. Job xxiii. 15. I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of supplications. And they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. Zec. xii. 10. And when the disciples saw him (Jesus) walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit. And they cried out for fear. Mat. xiv. 26. For they all saw him, and were troubled, and immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid. Mar. vi. 50. When Simon Peter saw "it" ("the miraculous draught of fishes") he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O God. Lu. v. 8. And as "they" ("the disciples" who had seen Jesus as they went to Emmaus) thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you but they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. Lu. xxiv. 36. 37. Behold, he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him, and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Re. i. 7.

Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, 5 whom ye sold into Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send 6 me before you to preserve life. For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which

4 I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold, &c.] And they sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver; and they brought Joseph into Egypt. Ge. xxxvii. 28.

5 Be not grieved.] Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her that her "warfare" (or “appointed time”), is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. Is. xl. 1, 2. Then said Jesus (from the cross), Father, forgive them (who crucified him), for they know not what they do.

Lu. xxiii. 34. Ye ought to forgive him (the incestuous person), and comfort him (on whom punishment was inflicted of many), lest perhaps such an one should be swallowed up of over much sorrow. 2 Co. ii. 7. For your sakes forgave I it (the crime of the incestuous person), in the person of Christ, lest Satan should get an advantage of us, for we are not ignorant of his devices. 2 Co. ii. 11.

God did send me before you.] See verse 7, 8. And they (the people of the land of Egypt) said (unto Joseph), Thou hast saved our lives. Ge. xlvii. 25. Lord had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahitophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom. 2 Sa. xvii. 14. Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away blessed be the name of the Lord. Job i. 21. He (the Lord) called for a famine upon the land; be brake the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Ps. cv. 16, 17. Him (Jesus), being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, "ye" (“the Jews") have taken (said Peter), and by wicked hands have crucified and slain, whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death; because it was not possible that be should be holden of it. Ac. ii. 23, 24. And when "they" ("the other apostles") had heard that (what the chief priests and elders had said to Peter and John), they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is. there shall neither be earing nor harvest. And God sent me be- 7 fore you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it was not you that sent me 8 hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith 9 thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down

plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine shall consume the land: and the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following, for it shall be very grievous. Ge. xli. 29, 30, 31. And the seven years of dearth began to come according as Joseph had said, and the dearth was in all lands but in all the land of Egypt there was bread: and the famine was over all the face of the earth. And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. Ge. xli. 54. 56. When that year was ended, they (the Egyptians) came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle: there is not ought left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands. Ge. xlvii. 18.

Earing nor harvest.] Then Joseph said unto the people (of Egypt), Behold, I have bought you this day, and your land for Pharaoh; lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. Ge. xlvii. 23. Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest. Ex. xxxiv. 21. And the elders of that city (the next unto the slain man) shall bring down the heifer (which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn the yoke), unto a rough valley which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley (as an expiation). De. xxi. 4. And he (the king whom ye seek, said Samuel) will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties, and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, &c. 1 Sa. viii. 12. Then (in shewing his mercies to his Church) will he (the Almighty) give the rain of thy seed that thou shalt sow the ground withal. In that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures; the oxen likewise, and the young asses that ear the ground, shall eat clean provender, &c. Is. xxx. 23, 24.

7 To save your lives.] And he (Samson, having slain a thousand Philistines with the jaw of an ass) was sore athirst, and called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant, and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised. Ju. xv. 18. And they (the three mighties of David) set themselves in the midst of that parcel of ground (which was full of barley), and delivered it, and slew the Philistines, and the Lord

saved them by a great deliverance.

So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. Ro. ix. 16.

Father to Pharaoh.] And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art. Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled. And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paaneah. And he gave him to wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On. And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls, and he gathered up all the fruit of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities. The food of the field which was round about every city laid he up in the same. Ge. xli. 38-49. And Micah (who had stolen silver from his mother, and had an house of gods) said unto "him (a "Levite of Beth-lehem"), Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals so the Levite went in.
