14 wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly. And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, north15 ward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for

him and his disciples. Go ye, and learn (said Jesus) what that meaneth: I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Matt. ix. 10. 13. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell; for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for thee. Matt. xi. 23, 24. Give God the praise (said the Pharisees to the blind man who received his sight), we know that this man is a sinner. Now we know that God heareth not sinners. John ix. 24. 31. (God) spared not the old world, turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; and delivered just Lot, &c. 2 Pet. ii. 6, 7, &c. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 7.

Before the Lord, &c.] The earth also was corrupt before God. Gen. vi. 11. He (Nimrod) was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Gen. x. 9.

And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord slew him. Gen. xxxviii. 7. "He" ("king Manasseh") wrought much wickedness in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger. 2 Kings xxi. 6. Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen, because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of his glory. Isa. iii. 8. Can any hide himself in secret places, that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Jer. xxiii. 24. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight, but all things are naked, and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Heb. iv. 13.

Lift up now thine eyes, &c.] See verse 10. Lift up thine eyes (0 Church of Christ) round about, and behold, all "these" ("the Gentiles") gather themselves together, and come unto thee. Isa. xlix. 18. Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all "they" ("the Gentiles") gather themselves together, they come to thee. Isa. ix. 4.

Northward, &c.] And "thou" ("Jacob," said the Lord, in the vision of the ladder) shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. Gen.

xxviii. 14. Get thee up to the top of Pisgah (said the Lord to Moses), and lift up thine eyes, westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes, for thou shalt not go over this Jordan. Deut. iii. 27.

15 To thee will I give it, &c.] Unto thy seed will I give this land. Gen. xii. 7. and com. Gen. xv. 18. I will establish my covenant between me and thee; and I will give unto thee the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. Gen. xvii. 7, 8. Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation. Gen. xviii. 18. Unto thy seed will I give this land. Gen. xxiv. 7. Sojourn in this land; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, will I give all these countries. Gen. xxvi. 3, 4. God Almighty bless thee, that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger. Gen. xxviii. 4. And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee (Jacob) I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. Gen. xxxv. 12. I will give this land to "thy" ("Jacob's") seed after thee, for an everlasting possession. Gen. xlviii. 4. This is the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan, with the coasts thereof. And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea this shall be your land. Numb. xxxiv. 2. 12, &c. Thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the Lord thy God giveth thee, and thou shalt say unto "him" ("the priest"), I am come unto the country which the Lord sware unto our fathers for to give us. Deut. xxvi. 2, 3. This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed. Deut. xxxiv. 4. Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham, thy friend, for ever? 2 Chron. xx. 7. Thou art the Lord, the God who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees; and madest a covenant with him, to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Gergashites, to give it, I say, to his seed. Nehem. ix. 7, 8. For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. Ps. xxxvii. 22. 29. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments: his seed shall be mighty upon

ever.

And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that 16 if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it 17 and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. Then Abram 18 removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord.

the earth. Ps. cxii. 1, 2. The people of thy holiness have possessed "it" ("thine inheritance") but a little while. Isa. Ixiii. 18. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Matt. v. 5. And he (God) gave him (Abraham) none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child. Acts vii. 5.

16 I will make thy seed, &c.] See Gen. xii. 2, 3. and com. Yea, I will bless "her" (“ Surah," Abraham's wife), and she shall be a mother of nations" (or "she shall become nations"): kings of people shall be of her. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee. hold I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly: twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. Gen. xvii. 16. 20. And also of the son of the bond-woman will I make a nation, because he thy seed. Gen. xxi. 13.

See chap. xxv. throughout. I will surely make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude (said Jacob, recounting God's promise, in his prayer to the God of Abraham). Gen. xxxii. 12. See Gen. xxxvi. throughout. I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven. Exod. xxxii. 13. Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Numb. xxiii. 10. The Lord your God hath multiplied you, and behold ye are this day (said Moses) as the stars of heaven for multitude. Deut. i. 10. They (the Israelites) came up as grasshoppers for multitude, for both they and their camels were without number. Judges vi. 5. Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude. 1 Kings iv. 20. And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to David; and all they of Israel were a thousand thousand, and an hundred thousand men, that drew sword; and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword. 1 Chron. xxi. 5. But David took not the number of them from twenty years old, and under, because the Lord had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens. 1 Chron. xxvii. 23. And these are the numbers of them of Judah, the captains of thousands, Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of valour, three hundred thousand; and next to him was Jehohanan, the captain, and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand. And next him was Amaziah, and with him two hundred

thousand mighty men of valour. And of Benjamin, Eliada, a mighty man of valour, and with him armed men, with bow and shield, two hundred thousand; and next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand, ready prepared for war. 2 Chron. xvii. 14-18. O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea; thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof. Isa. xlviii. 18, 19. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the seed of David my servant. Jer. xxxiii. 22. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed: not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all; (as it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations.) Rom. iv. 16, 17. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. Heb. xi. 12. After this I beheld, and lo, a great multitude which no man could number, of all nations and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and having palms in their hands. Rev. vii. 9.

18 Mamre.] For "he" ("Abram," the Hebrew) dwelt in the plain of Mamre, the Amorite. Gen. xiv. 13. And the Lord ap peared unto him in the plains of Mamre. Gen. xviii. 1.

Hebron.] And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba, the same is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. Gen. xxiii. 2. And Jacob came unto Isaac, his father, unto Mamre, unto the city of Arba (which is Hebron,) where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. Gen. xxxv. 27. So he (Israel) sent him (Joseph) out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. Gen. xxxvii. 14. And they (who were sent to search the land) ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron, (now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan, in Egypt). Numb. xiii. 22. And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb, the son of Jehunneh, the Kenezite, Hebron for an inheritance. Hebron, therefore, became the inheritance of Caleb, and the name of Hebron, before, was Kirjath-arba. Josh. xiv. 13, 14, 15.

Altar unto the Lord, &c.] See verse 4. And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord.

Gen.

CHAPTER XIV.

1 AND it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal 2 king of nations; That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar. 3 All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the 4 salt sea. Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thir5 teenth year they rebelled. And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims

viii. 20. and com. I have set the Lord always before me because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Ps. xvi. 8. I will, therefore, that men pray, every where lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting. 1 Tim. ii. 8.

CHAP. XIV.-1 Shinar.] See Gen. x. 10. and com. on "Shinar."

Ellasar.] Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers (the kings of Assyria) have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Hezeph, and the children of Eden, which were in Telassar? Isa. xxxvii. 12.

Elam.] See Gen. x. 22. and com. 2 Sodom.] See com. on chap. x. 19. Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom. Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom, &c. Isa. i. 9. 10.

Admah.] The whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the Lord overthrew in his anger and in his wrath. Deut. xxix. 23.

Zeboiim.] And another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim, toward the wilderness. 1 Sam. xiii. 18. The children also of Benjamin, from Geba, dwelt at Michmash, &c. at Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat. Nehem. xi. 31. 34.

Zoar.] See Gen. xiii. 10. and com. 3 Salt sea.] Then the Lord rained upon Sodom, and upon Gomorrah, brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven. Gen. xix. 24. And the border (of the land) shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea- Numb. xxxiv. 12. And unto the Reubenites, and unto the Gadites, I gave from Gilead; the plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth, even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdoth-pisgah, eastward. Deut. iii. 16, 17. And those (the waters) that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off. Josh. iii. 16. A

fruitful land (he turneth) into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. Ps. cvii. 34.

4 Served Chedorlaomer, &c.] And he (Noah) said, cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren: and he said, blessed be the Lord God of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant. Gen. ix. 25, 26.

They rebelled.] But he (Zedekiah) rebelled against him (the king of Babylon) in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? Shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant and be delivered? Ezek. xvii. 15.

5 The Rephaims.] Unto thy seed (said the Lord to Abram) have I given this land, from the river of Egypt, unto the great river, the river Euphrates: the Kenites, &c. &c. and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims. Gen. xv. 18. 20. For only Og, king of Bashan, remained of the remnant of giants. Your wives and your little ones shall abide in your cities which I have given you, until the Lord have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the Lord your God hath given them beyond Jordan; and then shall ye return every man unto his possession which I have given you. Ye shall not fear them, for the Lord your God, he shall fight for you. Deut. iii. 11. 20. 22. The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 2 Sam. v. 18. 22. And the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of the Rephaims. 2 Sam. xxiii. 13. Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 1 Chron. xi. 15. And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 1 Chron. xiv. 9. In that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, &c. And it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim. Isa. xvii. 5.

in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim, And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto 6 El-paran, which is by the wilderness. And they returned, and 7 came to En-mishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar. And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of 8 Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and

Ashteroth Karnaim, &c.] After he had slain Sihon, the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Ashtaroth, in Edrei, on this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law. Deut. i. 4. Josh. xii. 4. All the kingdom of Og, in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth, and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants; for these did Moses smite, and cast them out. And their coast was from Mahonaim, &c. And half Gilead and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, were pertain ing unto the children of Machir. Josh. xiii. 12. 31.

Zuzims.] That also was accounted a land of giants. Giants dwelt therein in old time: and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims. Deut. ii. 20. They of Ham had dwelt there of old. 1 Chron. iv. 40. And (God) smote the first-born in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham. Ps. lxxviii. 51. Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. 23. 27.

Ps. cv.

The Emims.] The Emims dwelt therein (in Ar of the Moabites) in times past; a people great and many, and tall as the Anakims; which also were accounted giants, but the Moabites call them Emims. Deut. ii. 10, 11.

Shaveh Kiriathaim.] And their coast (of the Reubenites) was from Aroer, &c. and Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zareth-shahar, in the mount of the valley. Josh. xiii. 16. 19. Against Moab, thus saith the Lord of hosts, Kiriathaim is confounded, and taken, &c. Jer. xlviii. 1. Judgment is come upon Kiriathim, and upon Bethgamul, &c. Jer. xlviii. 23. 6 The Horites.] These are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites, in mount Seir. These are the sons of Seir, the Horite, who inhabited the land. Gen. xxxvi. 9. 20. These are the dukes that came of Hori, among their dukes in the land of Seir. Gen. xxxvi. 30. The Horims also dwelt in Seir, beforetime. As he (God) did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims before them. (So the Lord destroyed the Zamzummims). Deut. ii. 12. 22. And the sons of Seir, Lotan, &c. &c. and the sons of Lotan, Hori, &c. &c. 1 Chron. i. 38, 39. El-paran.] And the angel of the Lord her" ("Hagar") by a fountain of

water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Sher. Gen. xvi. 7. And he (Ish

mael) dwelt in the wilderness of Paran. Gen. xxi. 21. And afterwards the people (of Israel) removed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran. Numb. xii. 16. And Moses, by the commandment of the Lord, sent them from the wilderness of Paran. Numb. xiii. 3. God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Hab. iii. 3.

7 En-mishpat.] Wherefore the well (which Hagar found) was called Beer-lahai-roi. Behold it is between Kadesh and Bered. Gen. xvi. 14. And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur. Gen. xx. 1. And the people abode in Kadesh. Numb. xx. 1. And when we departed from Horeb, &c. we came to Kadesh-barnea. So ye abode in Kadesh many days (said Moses). Deut. i. 19. 46.

Amalekites.] And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz, Esau's son, and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek. These &c. were the dukes of the sons of Esau, duke Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek. Gen. xxxvi. 12. 16. Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation. (Therefore Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nisi, that is, the Lord my banner). Exod. xvii. 8. 16. For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there (in the land) before you, and ye (the children of Israel) shall fall by the sword, because ye are turned away from the Lord. Then the Amalekites came down, which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.

Numb. xiv. 43. 45. And when he looked upon Amalek he (Balaam) took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations, but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever. Numb. xxiv. 20. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel. Now go and smite Amalek, &c. &c. 1 Sam. xv. 2, 3, &c. throughSee 1 Sam. chap. xxvii. xxx. throughout. Hazezon-tamar.] Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, there cometh a great multitude against thee, from beyond the sea, on this side Syria, and behold they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. 2 Chron. xx. 2. And (of) the uttermost cities of the tribe of Judah, &c. Nibshan and the city of salt, and En-gedi, &c. six cities with their villages. Josh. xv. 62.

the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with 9 them in the vale of Siddim; With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Sihnar, and 10 Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five. And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the 11 mountain. And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, 12 and all their victuals, and went their way. And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and 13 departed. And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite,

Fell there.] And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai, in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. Josh. viii. 24. Do unto them (the enemies of Israel) as unto the Midianites, which perished at Endor; they became as dung for the earth. Ps. lxxxiii. 10. And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare. Isa. xxiv. 18. He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare. Jer. xlviii. 44.

The mountain.] And it came to pass, when they (the angels) had brought them forth abroad, that he (the Lord) said, escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him. Gen. xix. 17. 30.

11 All the goods, &c.] And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also and the people. And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. Gen. xiv. 16. 21. And Abram took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran, and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. Gen. xii. 5. Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof. Thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee. Thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them. The Lord shall smite thee in

the knees and in the legs, with a sore botch that cannot be healed. And he (a fierce nation) shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed, which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee. Deut. xxviii. 31. 35. 51.

If

Dwelt in Sodom.] See Gen. xiii. 12, 13. And he (Moses) spake unto the congregation, saying, depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men (Dathan and Abiram), and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. Numb. xvi. 26. the scourge slay suddenly, he (the Lord) will laugh at the trial of the innocent. Job ix. 23. Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way? Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee. Know, therefore, and see, that it is an evil thing, and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of hosts. Jer. ii. 17. 19. But they that will be rich fall into temptation, and a snare, and inte many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. But thou, O man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 1 Tim. vi. 9. 11. As many as I love I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous, therefore, and repent. Rev. iii. 19. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not her plagues. Rev. xviii. 4.

13 One that had escaped, &c.] And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head (announcing the victory of the Philistines, and the ark taken). I Sam. iv. 12. They have slain the servants (of Job) with the edge of the sword, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. Job i. 15.

The Hebrew.] She (Potiphar's wife) called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, see, he hath brought in an
