PREFACE.

THIS book is designed to meet the wants of Primary Schools, and to develop a plan of instruction which shall be strictly elementary, inductive, and progressive. It begins with the number ONE, and after carefully illustrating that in the first lesson, introduces the number Two in the second, the number THREE in the third, and in like manner a new number in each of the first twenty lessons.

Each number is first illustrated to the eye, then the methods of writing it are exhibited, then the additions. by which it may be produced are given, then the reverse subtractions, and lastly, such problems as seem likely to interest children, while leading them to a practical application of the operations previously illustrated.

In the 22d and 23d lessons, numbers above twenty are for the first time introduced. The manner in which they are formed from ten, and the methods of writing them, are explained, but no other exercises upon them are given.

By a similar arrangement to that adopted in the lessons on Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
