CHAPITRE VIII. L'ÉGARD des choses qui ont été sacrifiées aux idoles, nous savons que nous avons tous assez de connaissance là-dessus; mais la connaissance enfle, au lieu que la charité édifie.

2 Et si quelqu'un présume de savoir quelque chose, il n'a encore rien connu comme il faut le connaître.

3 Mais si quelqu'un aime Dieu, Dieu est connu de lui.

4 Pour ce qui est donc de manger des choses sacrifiées aux idoles, nous savons qu'une idole n'est rien dans le monde, et qu'il n'y a qu'un seul Dieu.

5 Car, quoiqu'il y en ait, soit dans le ciel, soit sur la terre, qui sont appelés dieux, comme, en effet, il y a plusieurs dieux et plusieurs seigneurs ;

6 Toutefois, nous n'avons qu'un seul Dieu, qui est le Père, duquel procèdent toutes choses, et nous sommes pour lui; et un seul Seigneur Jésus-Christ, par lequel sont toutes choses, et nous sommes parlui. 7 Mais tous n'ont pas cette connaissance; car quelques-uns, dans l'opinion qu'ils ont encore de l'idole, mangent une chose comme sacrifiée à l'idole; et leur conscience étant faible, elle en est souillée.

8 A la vérité, la viande ne nous rend pas agréables à Dieu; car si nous mangeons, il ne nous en revient aucun avantage; et si nous ne mangeons pas, nous n'en recevons aucun préjudice.

9 Mais prenez garde que cette liberté que vous avez, ne soit en quelque manière en scandale à ceux qui sont faibles.

3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

10 Car, si quelqu'un d'eux te voit, toi qui as de la connaissance, assis à table dans le temple des idoles, la conscience de celui qui est faible ne sera-t-elle pas déterminée à manger de ce qui est sacrifié aux idoles ? 11 Et ainsi, ton frère qui est faible, pour lequel Christ est mort, périra par ta connaissance.

12 Or, quand vous péchez ainsi contre vos frères, et que vous blessez leur conscience qui est faible, vous péchez contre Christ.

13 C'est pourquoi, si ce que je mange scandalise mon frère, je ne mangerai jamais de chair, pour ne pas donner du scandale à mon frère.

CHAPITRE IX.

10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?

12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

CHAPTER IX.

pas libre? N'ai-je pas vu JésusChrist notre Seigneur? N'êtes-vous pas mon ouvrage en notre Seigneur? 2 Si je ne suis pas apôtre pour les autres, je le suis au moins pour vous; car vous êtes le sceau de mon apostolat en notre Seigneur? 3 C'est là ma défense contre ceux qui me condamnent.

4 N'avons-nous pas le droit de vous demander à manger et à boire ? 5 N'avons-nous pas le pouvoir de mener partout avec nous une femme d'entre nos sœurs, comme font les autres apôtres, et les frères du Seigneur, et Céphas?

6 Ou, n'y a-t-il que moi seul et Barnabas, qui n'ayons pas le droit de ne point travailler?

7 Qui est-ce qui va à la guerre à ses propres dépens? Qui est-ce qui plante une vigne, et qui n'en mange pas du fruit? Ou, qui estce qui paît un troupeau, et qui ne mange pas du lait du troupeau ?

8 Dis-je ceci seulement selon la coutume des hommes? La loi ne le dit-elle pas aussi?

have not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

2 If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

3 Mine answer to them that do examine me is this:

4 Have we not power to eat and to drink?

5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

8 Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also ?

9 Car il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse Tu n'emmusèleras point le bœuf qui foule le grain.

11 Si nous avons semé parmi vous les biens spirituels, est-ce une si grande chose que nous moissonnions de vos biens charnels?

12 Si d'autres usent de ce droit sur vous, pourquoi n'en userionsnous pas plutôt? Cependant, nous n'en avons point usé, mais nous souffrons tout, afin de n'apporter aucun obstacle à l'évangile de Christ. 13 Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui font le service sacré, mangent des choses sacrées; et que ceux qui servent à l'autel, participent à ce qui est offert sur l'autel?

14 De même aussi, le Seigneur a ordonné que ceux qui annoncent l'évangile, vivent de l'évangile. 15 Mais pour moi, je n'ai usé d'aucun de ces droits, et je n'écris point ceci, afin qu'on en use ainsi envers moi; car j'aimerais mieux mourir, que si quelqu'un m'ôtait ce sujet de gloire.

16 Car si je prêche l'évangile, je n'ai pas sujet de m'en glorifier, parce que la nécessité m'en est imposée; et malheur à moi, si je ne prêche pas l'évangile !

17 Que si je le fais volontairement, j'en recevrai la récompense; mais si je le fais à regret, la dispensation ne laisse pas de m'en être commise. 18 Quelle récompense ai-je donc ? C'est qu'en prêchant l'évangile, j'annonce l'évangile de Christ sans qu'il en coûte rien, et sans me prévaloir du droit que l'évangile me donne.

19 Car, quoique je sois libre à l'égard de tous, je me suis assujetti | à tous, afin de gagner plus de per

sonnes.

11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

15 But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

18 What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the

more.

20 J'ai été comme Juif avec les Juifs, afin de gagner les Juifs; avec ceux qui sont sous la loi, comme si j'eusse été sous la loi, afin de gagner ceux qui sont sous la loi;

21 Avec ceux qui sont sans loi, comme si j'eusse été sans loi, (quoique je ne sois point sans loi à l'égard de Dieu, puisque je suis sous la loi de Christ) afin de gagner ceux qui sont sans loi.

22 J'ai été avec les faibles, comme si j'eusse été faible, afin de gagner les faibles; je me suis fait tout à tous, afin d'en sauver au moins quelques-uns.

23 Et je fais tout cela à cause de l'évangile, afin d'avoir part aux biens qu'il promet.

20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

23 And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

25 Tout homme qui combat, s'abstient de tout; et ces gens-là le font, pour avoir une couronne corruptible; mais nous le faisons pour en avoir une incorruptible.

26 Je cours donc, non à l'aventure; je frappe, mais non pas en l'air;

25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

MOREOVER, brethren, I would

2 Et qu'ils ont tous été baptisés en Moïse dans la nuée et dans la mer; 3 Et qu'ils ont tous mangé de la même viande spirituelle;

4 Et qu'ils ont tous bu du même breuvage spirituel; car ils buvaient de l'eau du Rocher spirituel qui les suivait; et ce Rocher était Christ;

rant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

5 Mais Dieu n'a point mis son affection en la plupart d'entre eux; car ils tombèrent morts dans le désert. 6 Or, ces choses ont été des exemples pour nous, afin que nous ne désirions point de mauvaises choses, comme ils en désirèrent;

7 Et que Vous ne deveniez point idolâtres, comme quelquesuns d'eux, selon qu'il est écrit: Le peuple s'assit pour manger et pour boire, et ensuite ils se levèrent pour danser;

8 Et que nous ne commettions point de fornication, comme quelques-uns d'eux en commirent; et il y en eut vingt-trois mille qui périrent en un même jour;

9 Et que nous ne tentions point Christ, comme quelques-uns d'eux le tentèrent; et ils périrent par les serpens;

10 Et que vous ne murmuriez point, comme quelques-uns d'eux murmurèrent; et ils périrent par l'ange exterminateur.

11 Toutes ces choses leur arrivaient pour servir de figures; et elles sont écrites pour nous instruire, nous qui sommes parvenus aux derniers temps.

12 C'est pourquoi, que celui qui croit être debout, prenne garde qu'il ne tombe.

13 Aucune tentation ne vous est survenue qui n'ait été une tentation humaine. Dieu est fidèle, qui ne permettra point que vous soyez tentés au-delà de vos forces; mais avec la tentation il vous en donnera aussi l'issue, de sorte que vous la puissiez supporter.

14 C'est pourquoi, mes bien-aimés, fuyez l'idolâtrie.

15 Je vous parle comme à des personnes intelligentes; jugez vousmêmes de ce que je dis.

16 La coupe de bénédiction que nous bénissons, n'est-elle pas la communion du sang de Christ? Le pain que nous rompons, n'est-il pas la communion du corps de Christ?

5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are

come.

12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
