Form of tabular statement to be submitted by the Examiners. FORM OF PROCEDURE TO BE OBSERVED IN I. A Convocation for the purpose of conferring degrees shall be held annually in the month of March. II. The Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Fellows shall assemble in the Senate-room at the hour named for the Convocation, and shall proceed in procession from it to the hall in which the degrees are to be conferred. III. The hall shall be so arranged that the Chancellor's chair may be somewhat in advance; the chairs assigned to the ViceChancellor and Fellows being placed in a half circle, so as to leave full space for the presentation of the candidates. IV. The candidates shall be arranged in a line opposite to the Chancellor. V. On the procession entering the hall, the candidates shall rise and remain standing until the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Fellows have taken their seats. VI. The Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Fellows having taken their places, the Chancellor shall say: This convocation of the Senate of the University of Madras has been called to confer Degrees upon the candidates who, in the examination recently held for that purpose, have been certified to be worthy of the same. Let the Registrar read the names of the candidates approved and recommended by the Examiners for Degrees. The Registrar shall then read the report of the Examiners, which shall be in the following form: We, the Examiners appointed by the Senate of the University of Madras to conduct the examination for the degree of -———————, do hereby certify that we have examined the persons whose names are hereinafter set down, and that we do adjudge them to be worthy of the degree of and do recommend them accordingly to be admitted to the same. Witness our hands, &c. The Chancellor shall then say : Let the candidates stand forward. Then the candidates standing up and advancing a step or two, the Chancellor shall put them the following questions: Question. Do you sincerely promise and declare that, if admitted to the degrees for which you are severally candidates, and for which you have been recommended, you will in your daily life and conversation conduct yourselves as becomes Members of this University? Answer. I do promise. Quest. Do you promise that to the utmost of your opportunity and ability you will support and promote the cause of morality and sound learning? Ans. I do promise. Quest. Do you promise that you will, as far as in you lies, uphold and advance social order and the well-being of your fellow-men? Ans. I do promise. In the case of candidates for Medical or Legal Degrees, the following addition shall be made : : Quest. Do you promise that you will faithfully and carefully fulfil the duties of the Medical (or Legal) profession, that you will on all occasions maintain its purity and reputation, and that you will never deviate from the straight path of its honourable exercise by making your knowledge subservient to unworthy ends ? Ans. I do promise. Then the Chancellor shall say: Let the candidates be now presented. Then the candidates shall be presented by the heads of their respective schools or colleges, or by one of the Examiners, to the Chancellor, one by one, in the order in which they stand in the Examiners' report. The manner of presentation shall be as follows: The presenter taking the right hand of the candidate shall advance with him to the footstool of the Chancellor, and shall say: Mr., or My Lord Chancellor, I present unto you this person who has been certified after examination, to be in the Univer , duly qualified to receive the Degree of sity of Madras. Then the Chancellor shall say to the candidate: A. B., by virtue of the authority vested in me as Chancellor of the University of Madras, I admit thee to the Degree of in this University, and in token thereof I present unto thee this Diploma, and authorize thee to wear the hood ordained, as the insignia of thy Degree. The Chancellor shall then present to the candidate the Diploma; and the presenter shall invest him with the hood. The candidate shall then bow and retire to his place. When all the candidates have been presented, the Chancellor shall say to the Registrar: Let the Degrees conferred now be proclaimed. Then the Registrar shall read the Record of the Degrees conferred, as follows: We the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Fellows of the University of Madras, do hereby proclaim and make known that we have admitted to the Degree of the following persons, they having been first certified unto us as fit persons to receive the same. The Registrar shall then present the above Record to the Chancellor, who shall sign the same. Then an address shall be made to the candidates by a Member of the Senate appointed by the Chancellor, exhorting them to conduct themselves suitably unto the position to which, by the Degree conferred upon them, they have attained. The address being ended, the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Fellows shall rise up, and the Chancellor shall say: I dissolve this Convocation. Then the Chancellor and Senate shall retire in procession to the Senate room, the Graduates standing. In the absence of the Chancellor, his place shall be taken, and his duties performed, by the Vice-Chancellor. ACADEMIC ROBES. (Appointed by the Senate.) THE CHANCELLOR. A purple teray velvet gown, made like an Oxford Proctor's Dress Gown, with two-inch gold lace down the fronts and round the bottom of the sleeves outside. A black velvet Academic cap, bound round with gold lace and gold tassel, nine inches long. VICE-CHANCELLOR. A purple silk gown, same shape as the Chancellor's, and trimmed in the same way, but with silver lace. A cap like the Chancellor's, but with silver lace and tassel. A gown as B. A., with velvet fronts, &c. Hood as B. A., but with the addition of a gold colored border. A puce silk gown. Hood lined with pink. B. L. M. B. and C. M. A Maroon silk gown, shape of the B. A., with velvet fronts. Hood lined with lilac. M. D. A Maroon silk gown with velvet fronts, &c. B. C. E. A red silk gown, same shape as the B. A. Hood lined with sky-blue. |
