On the 1st of Juuary 183s, the number of European commis. sioned officers belonging to the Bengal army, was two thousand four hundred and thirty-nine. The number of native commissioned officers was one thousand seven hundred and nine. During the past year, 1337, of this large body of officers, but five European, and four native officers have been charged with such conduct as has rendered courts martial necessary. Of the cases of European officers, one was most honorably acquitted of all moral crime; the crime of another arose from acri. dent; and two of the remaining three, were cases of breach of discipline, chiefly arising from errors, of judgment. There was but one conviction, comprizing any serious turpiamongst either class of officers His Excellency deems such an absence of crime, or misconduct, to be most highly honorable to the officers of the Bengal army. European and Native; and he offers them the tribute of his warmest approbation in consequence. He feels that the circumstances detailed, will fully justify his s liciting, as a boon to bims-If, the full pardon of Lieutenant M.
