IN COMPILING this little volume, I have endeavored to supply a want which I, in common with many other teachers, perhaps, have deeply felt; and my first object in undertaking the work was, to prepare a convenient manual for conducting a teachers' class in my own school; also, for examining students in the common branches, before allowing them to enter advanced classes; for frequent reviews, &c. In many of our schools too little attention is paid to examinations and reviews. Teachers are not sufficiently thorough-especially in our common country schools. One great object in view by the author in the preparation of this work, was to place into the hands of those intending to teach, a manual sufficient in extent, without being burdensome, to assist them to prepare thoroughly for the work; that they may be prepared to go to the too often " dreaded examination room," minus "fear and trembling." No candidate for a teacher's certificate need fear the examination room, nor the examiners, if he or she can answer understandingly all the questions here submitted.
