PREFACE:

ON few subjects have more productions issued from the press, than on Arithmetic; yet there is still a complaint among judicious Teachers, that these productions are often but ill adapted to the purposes of instruction. While most of them contain a great deal of obsolete and useless matter, especially in the form of exercises, they are very deficient in matter indispensably requisite to convey to learners a full and clear view of the principles and modern practice of calculation.

In the following pages, an attempt is made to supply a text-book, for the use of schools, free from these imperfections; comprising a full course of such Arithmetical instruction, as is necessary for preparing young men either for prosecuting their mathematical studies with advantage, or for the mercantile profession, and business in general; and containing nothing but what has a direct tendency to promote these objects.
