PREFACE

This volume presents the second half of the instruction papers in Shop Mathematics as developed and used in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin. In it the authors have endeavored to present such of the principles of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and logarithms as have been found to be of practical value in the shop, showing some of the better known applications and making the presentation as practical as seemed possible. Experience in the teaching of this course for over five years shows that it has been successful in developing in the student ability to apply the principles to his own shop problems and in giving him a good mathematical preparation for advanced technical study.

It is here presented in the belief that it will be found suitable for home study and for use as a text in trade schools, technical high schools and continuation schools.

The authors are indebted to Mr. Herbert J. Lehmann, Assistant in Applied Mathematics in the University Extension Division, for many valuable suggestions and criticisms; also to the authors and publishers of Van Velzer and Slichter's logarithm tables for permission to use their plates.
