Enjoyable survey of the progress of engineering in the U.K. in various fields during the late 18th and through the 19th centuries. Part of the enjoyment is that Rolt doesn't toss around a lot of jargon, but carefully and patiently explains things; thus, you're able to follow along with relative ease, even if you have no experience in the area. His writing is also bright and chatty, and a pleasure to read. Recommended. ( )
